Former President Jimmy Carter, who served as the 39th President of the United States from 1977 to 1981, passed away on Sunday at his home in Plains, Georgia, at the remarkable age of 100. His death marks the end of an era for a man who, despite a challenging presidency, became celebrated for his extensive humanitarian efforts post-office.

Born on October 1, 1924, in Plains, Carter was the first president to live to 100 and the longest-lived former President in U.S. history. His life began on a peanut farm, and his journey took him from the U.S. Naval Academy to the White House. After losing the 1980 election to Ronald Reagan, Carter's legacy transformed through his dedication to human rights, peace, and global health initiatives, earning him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002. His resilience in the face of defeat is a testament to his inspiring character.

Carter's presidency was marked by significant achievements, such as the Camp David Accords, which led to a peace treaty between Egypt and Israel, and his emphasis on energy conservation and environmental protection. However, his term was also defined by economic struggles, including high inflation and unemployment, as well as the Iran hostage crisis, significantly impacting his public approval ratings.

Following his presidency, Carter became known for his hands-on approach to humanitarian work. With his wife, Rosalynn Carter, he co-founded The Carter Center in 1982, focusing on advancing human rights, democracy, and health worldwide. Their efforts, which included monitoring elections for fairness in over 100 countries, nearly eradicating Guinea worm disease, and advocating for mental health, have left a lasting impact on a global scale. Additionally, the Carters worked tirelessly with Habitat for Humanity, helping to build homes for those in need.

Carter's commitment to public service extended into his later years, where he continued to teach Sunday school at his local Baptist church, even after facing numerous health challenges, including cancer and various falls. His choice to enter hospice care in February 2023 was made public, showcasing his desire to live the remainder of his life surrounded by family in Plains, rather than continuing with aggressive medical treatments.

Rosalynn Carter, his partner of 77 years, predeceased him in November 2023, marking another significant loss for Carter in his final years. Their long marriage was a testament to their shared commitment to service and love, resonating with many nationwide and globally.

Upon the announcement of his passing, tributes poured in from around the globe, highlighting his influence as a U.S. president and an international humanitarian. Leaders like UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed their thoughts on Carter's legacy and contributions. President Joe Biden, in his statement, highlighted Carter's integrity and dedication to service, emphasizing that his legacy would continue to inspire future generations.

Carter is survived by his four children, Jack, Chip, Jeff, and Amy, as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His life and work will be remembered through the continued operations of The Carter Center and the many lives touched by his hands-on approach to bettering the world. The continuation of his legacy through these institutions and the people he inspired gives hope for a better future.

The nation and the world now mourn the loss of a figure whose life exemplified the potential for redemption and growth after political defeat, leaving behind a legacy of peace, advocacy, and philanthropy.
