India Train Crash: Official Claims A Signal System Fault Caused the Deadly Tragedy that Killed Over 300

On June 2, 2023, a triple train collision occurred close to Balasore City in the eastern Indian state of Odisha. An initial crash involving a freight train near Bahanaga Bazar railway station set off a subsequent collision between two passenger trains, the 12841 Coromandel Express and the 12864 SMVT Bengaluru–Howrah SF Express.

According to Sunday's official announcement, a malfunction in the electronic signal system was the cause of the catastrophic train crash in India, which claimed almost 300 lives and wounded hundreds. The malfunction prompted a passenger train to mistakenly switch tracks, colliding with a freight train in the eastern Indian state of Odisha, resulting in a catastrophic collision involving another passenger train.

On Friday (June 2) night, two passenger trains derailed in Balasore district in Odisha in one of the worst rail disasters the country has seen in years. Officials worked relentlessly to deal with the wreckage.

On Sunday (June 4), a statement from the Odisha government updated the death count to 275. In addition, officials reported that the number of injured had surpassed 850 by Saturday night. Earlier that day, the Indian army, National Disaster Response Force, local police, and additional rescue teams collaborated to locate any survivors.

Sudhanshu Sarangi, the head of Odisha's fire services, expressed a bleak outlook on finding survivors to the press on Saturday morning. As captured in videos, the horrifying scene of the accident showed bodies lined up along the train tracks as the injured were taken to hospitals. Pradeep Jena, the Chief Secretary of Odisha, stated that over 200 ambulances were actively involved in the rescue operation.

The Root Cause

Senior railway authority Jaya Verma Sinha reported that initial inquiries indicated that a signal had been given to the high-speed Coromandel Express to use the main rail line. However, a subsequent change in the movement led the train to divert onto an adjoining loop line, colliding with a freight train carrying iron ore.

She explained that the impact of the collision caused the Coromandel Express carriages to tip over onto another track, leading to the derailment of the oncoming Yesvantpur-Howrah Express from the opposite direction.

She noted that the two passenger trains, which carried 2,296 passengers, were within the speed limit. Typically, freight trains are stationed on adjacent loop lines to keep the main lines free for passenger trains.

Verma pointed out that the disaster's main reason was an error in the electronic signaling system. However, she added that a comprehensive investigation would determine if the error was human-related or a technical fault.

The electronic interlocking system is a protective measure to avoid overlapping train movements. Additionally, it oversees the signals that notify train operators about their proximity to other trains, their speed limits, and any idle trains on the route. Verma stated that the system is flawless, with a 99.9% success rate. However, there always remains a minuscule 0.1% possibility of error. When asked about the possibility of deliberate sabotage causing the crash, she noted that "nothing can be completely dismissed."

Rescue Operation

By Sunday, the only traces of the disaster were severely damaged and overturned carriages. Railway staff worked tirelessly under the harsh sunlight, placing cement blocks to mend the shattered tracks. A team of diggers was tasked with clearing the site by removing mud and debris from the deadly crash scene.

Officials reported that fifteen bodies were retrieved on Saturday evening. Throughout the night, heavy lifting equipment was deployed to dislodge an engine that had landed atop a railway car. By Sunday morning, no additional dead bodies were found within the engine, and the task was deemed complete.

Meanwhile, numerous distressed family members found it challenging to identify the remains of their kin due to the severity of their injuries. Others were combing through hospitals in search of any surviving relatives.

This tragic accident comes at a time when Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasizes the modernization of India's historic British colonial-era railway network. However, despite efforts by the government to enhance safety, numerous accidents occur annually on India's railway system, the most extensive single-management train network globally, in a country now holding the title of the world's most populous nation, with 1.42 billion inhabitants.

On Saturday, Prime Minister Modi visited the accident site and discussed the situation with the rescue officials. He also visited a hospital to check on the injured and spoke to some survivors. Expressing his deep empathy for the victims of the crash to reporters, Modi assured them that the government would provide all possible assistance and hold those responsible for the tragedy accountable.
