Modi Elected for 3rd Term, Set to Form New Indian Government

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was formally elected as the leader of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) coalition on Friday. This coalition secured the most seats in the national election despite Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) not winning a majority. At 73 years old, Modi is set to be sworn in as prime minister on Sunday for an unprecedented third term. 

The BJP, under Modi's leadership, has governed India as part of the NDA coalition for the past decade. However, this marks the first time the party has required support from its regional allies to form a government. Modi emphasized the unity and resilience of the NDA coalition, stating, "This alliance of ours reflects India’s spirit in its true sense. We were neither defeated nor are we defeated ... it was an NDA government in the past, still is and will be."

Full results from India's extensive election, which started in mid-April, were released on Wednesday. In an unexpected outcome, the BJP secured 240 seats, significantly short of the 272 needed for a majority. Collectively, the NDA coalition parties won 293 seats in the 543-member lower house of parliament.

Meanwhile, Modi's political rival, the INDIA alliance led by the Congress party, mounted a stronger-than-anticipated challenge, doubling its previous election count to secure 232 seats.

Prior to Modi's formal election as the NDA leader, local media reported that two key regional allies crucial to his coalition government—the Telugu Desam Party in Andhra Pradesh and Janata Dal (United) in Bihar—were seeking important ministry positions, some of which have been held by the BJP.

On Thursday, the newly empowered opposition increased pressure on Modi and the BJP. In a news conference, Rahul Gandhi, the Congress party’s chief campaigner, called for a parliamentary investigation into what he described as the "biggest stock market scam," accusing Modi and other top BJP ministers of misleading retail investors, resulting in financial losses.

India's two main benchmark stock indexes reached new highs on Monday after exit polls forecasted a BJP victory. However, they fell sharply on Tuesday, closing down over 5% as early vote counts started coming in.

In television interviews last month, Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah predicted that the markets would rise when results were announced on June 4. The BJP dismissed Gandhi's allegations of collusion between the party and exit pollsters, accusing the Congress leader of attempting to dissuade investors.
