India's largest natural gas importer, Petronet LNG, is on the brink of finalizing an extension to its long-standing liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply contract with Qatar. The anticipated agreement, slated for later this month, aims to prolong the existing deal beyond its current expiration in 2028, as revealed by India’s Oil Secretary, Pankaj Jain, in a statement made on Wednesday in New Delhi. This extension holds substantial implications for the energy landscape in the region and underscores the enduring partnership between the two nations.
"We are in the final stages of negotiations and are optimistic about sealing the deal soon," remarked Secretary Jain during discussions with reporters in New Delhi, as reported by Reuters.
Qatar, renowned globally as a key exporter of LNG, typically favors entering long-term agreements with its buyers. With the deadline set by Qatar for Indian customers to explore possibilities for extending or renewing agreements beyond 2028, expiring at the close of 2023, Petronet LNG has been engaged in active negotiations to secure its future supply.
Presently, Petronet holds a substantial long-term agreement with Qatar, ensuring an annual import of 7.5 million metric tons of LNG. Over recent months, Qatar has inked extensive long-term agreements, spanning 27 years, with several strategic partners and customers, including notable entities like China’s Sinopec and China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC). Additionally, European majors such as Shell, TotalEnergies, and Eni—having minority stakes in Qatar’s expansive LNG projects—have also entered into such agreements.
Qatar's strategic collaborations and long-term commitments have been visibly solidified by several landmark deals. Notably, in October, QatarEnergy secured a 27-year agreement to supply LNG to Eni in Italy, following similar agreements with Shell and TotalEnergies for supplies to the Netherlands and France, respectively. These partnerships are crucial given that Eni, Shell, and TotalEnergies maintain minority ownership in various LNG production trains as part of Qatar's North Field expansion project.
The inauguration of the North Field expansion project in October marked a significant milestone for Qatar. As the world's largest LNG project, it is set to amplify the Gulf nation's export capacity by an impressive 48 million tons per annum (mmtpa) by 2027.
Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, Minister of State for Energy Affairs and CEO of QatarEnergy, highlighted in July of the previous year that QatarEnergy is poised to contribute a substantial 40% of the new LNG supply entering the market by 2029 once all ongoing projects reach operational maturity.
The impending extension of the LNG deal between Petronet and Qatar reflects not only India's burgeoning energy needs but also the stability and significance of Qatar as a dependable supplier in the global LNG market.
