India Surpasses China, Sends Record Number of Students to U.S. for Higher Education

In a significant milestone, India has overtaken China as the leading source of international graduate students in the United States, marking the first time since the academic year 2009-10, as revealed by the recently published Open Doors Report (ODR). The report, a collaborative effort between the Institute of International Education (IIE) and the U.S. government's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, highlights a consistent upward trajectory in the influx of Indian students to pursue higher education in the U.S.
Released on Monday, the Open Doors Report discloses a remarkable 35% increase in Indian students choosing the United States as their academic destination, reaching an unprecedented figure of 268,923 students during the academic year 2022-23. This surge solidifies India's position, with its students now constituting more than 25% of the total foreign student population in the United States, which surpasses the one million mark.
Of particular note is the substantial growth in the number of Indian graduate students, witnessing a remarkable 63% increase to 165,936 students. This surge accounts for an additional 64,000 students compared to the previous year. Moreover, the report indicates a 16% rise in Indian undergraduate students, showcasing the diversification of academic pursuits among the Indian student community.
A significant aspect contributing to the surge in Indian students in the U.S. is the popularity of optional practical training (OPT), and temporary work permission, allowing eligible students to gain real-world experience in alignment with their field of study. Notably, 69,062 Indian students opted for OPT, reflecting the growing emphasis on practical skill development.
In a press release, the U.S. Embassy in India highlighted the issuance of a record number of student visas during the primary student visa season of June-August 2023. Consular officers across India granted 95,269 visas in the F, M, and J categories, representing an 18% increase compared to the same period in 2022.
U.S. Ambassador to India, Eric Garcetti, expressed enthusiasm about the positive impact of Indian students on fostering closer ties between the two nations. Acknowledging the strength of the Indian educational system in preparing students for global competition, Ambassador Garcetti expressed hope for continued Indian leadership in international education. He also stressed the need to balance the numbers, encouraging equal participation of women in pursuing studies in the United States while promoting more U.S. students to experience the diverse offerings of India.
The increasing number of Indian students opting for the U.S. as their preferred educational destination signals the robustness of India's education system. It accentuates the deepening ties between the two nations. Also, this surge in academic migration reflects a broader trend of global connectivity and collaboration in education. Besides that, the educational bridge being built between these two countries serves as a testament to the evolving nature of their partnership, promising potential impacts on both academic and diplomatic fronts.
