Super Garuda Shield 2022 — Indonesia, US Kick Starts Military Exercise Amid Heightened Indo-Pacific Tensions

Indonesia and the United States, along with Australia, Japan, and Singapore, launched a combined military exercise — Super Garuda Shield 2022 — on August 1 (Monday) as a "show of solidarity" in the face of escalating tensions in the Indo-Pacific region.


According to a statement from the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta, "Super Garuda Shield 2022 is significantly larger in scope and scale than previous exercises, with many nations participating or observing for the first time."


The 2-weeks exercise comes as China announced a series of live-fire drills in the South China Sea and Taiwan Strait amid rumors of a planned visit of Nancy Pelosi (Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives) to Taiwan. Some 4,000 Indonesian and U.S. troops (each 2,000) are participating in the two-week drills in Sumatra and Kalimantan.



The fact that one of the training locations for Super Garuda Shield 2022 will be on the Riau Islands carries its "own weight of importance." Tensions rose in 2016 and early 2020 over the presence of Chinese fishing boats in the waters near Indonesia's Natuna Islands, where Beijing had urged Jakarta to stop digging for oil and gas. Both countries claim these areas. The Riau Islands Province encompasses the North Natuna Sea, and the naval training in this region could assist participating countries in better comprehending the operational context of the incidents that have occurred there in the past.


Traditionally, the only participants in the Garuda Shield exercises were the army and the paratroopers. However, Super Garuda Shield 2022 includes the naval warships of expanding participants like Japan and Singapore.


As observer nations, Canada, France, India, Malaysia, South Korea, Papua New Guinea, and East Timor will all be present, along with the United Kingdom.


Note: Indonesia is not a claimant in the conflict that is taking place in the South China Sea; nonetheless, Jakarta does share interests in exploring marine resources in those "contested waters."
