Pelosi Kicks-off Asia tour, US Deploys Ships, Military Planes near Taiwan

China is on edge as rumors of Nancy Pelosi's Taiwan visit circulate.

Today, early morning, Pelosi landed in Singapore on a US Air Force Boeing C-40C US (Reg. No: 09-0540). She and her delegation met Singapore prime minister Lee Hsien Loong and other high-ranking officials. Pelosi will next travel to Malaysia, South Korea, and Japan but has remained tight-lipped about a potential trip to Taiwan.


Pelosi and her team have not confirmed it yet, but if she does, this will be the first visit by a sitting US House speaker since Republican Newt Gingrich met with president Lee Teng-hui 25 years ago. In preparation for this trip and in response to China's live-fire South China Sea drills, the United States military is deploying its assets, such as aircraft carriers and heavy planes, closer to Taiwan.


USS Ronald Reagan, a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, left Singapore on July 25 and was found cruising about 185km (115 miles) from the contested Fiery Cross Reef in the Spratlys chain on July 28 (last week Thursday). Reagan is leading a carrier strike group, including the USNS Tippecanoe replenishment oiler and the USS Antietam cruiser. If the carrier group maintains its current bearings, it will reach the Taiwan Strait within a few days. 


According to Biden's aides, President chose not to urge Pelosi directly to cancel her trip due to his respect for the independence of Congress, developed during his 36 years in the Senate. He is also evidently unwilling to back down in the face of Chinese threats, such as Beijing's warning that the United States was "playing with fire" after Biden's almost 2-and-1/2 hr call with Chinese President Xi Jinping on July 28.


The Chinese military is currently putting on a display of force; it said it was holding live-fire drills in the Taiwan Strait and released rare footage via state-broadcaster CCTV of a similar exercise in the South China Sea. The video showed live-fire training by the Type 055 guided-missile destroyer Yanan. 


The Fujian Maritime Safety Administration, one of the regional branches of the Maritime Safety Administration of the People's Republic of China (中华人民共和国海事局), announced that the drills would be carried out off the waters of Pingtan between 0800 hrs and 2100 hrs. And it added that all vessels were prohibited from approaching the region during the exercise. In addition, on August 2 (Tuesday) and August 3 (Wednesday), the Gulf of Tonkin off the southwest coast of Guangdong will also be a no-go zone due to gunnery exercises. Note: Roughly 125 kilometers (75 miles) separate Pingtan from the coast of Taiwan, while about 185 kilometers separate it from Taipei, the capital of Taiwan.


Meanwhile, a major international biennial naval exercise — RIMPAC (Rim of the Pacific), led by the US Navy, continues in the vicinity of Hawaii and southern California. The exercise began in late June, involved more than 25,000 personnel from 26 countries, and will last until today.
