Amid China-Taiwan tensions, several high-definition images of China’s Type 055 stealth-guided missile destroyer CNS Nanchang (pennant number 101), have recently appeared on social media. Type 055 (NATO/OSD: Renhai-class cruiser) is the most advanced surface combatant yet manufactured by China. It marks dramatic improvements in the traditional PLA Navy's weaknesses, such as Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW). This new kind of vessel provides a very substantial naval capability to escort Chinese carrier groups, safeguard Beijing's lengthy sea lanes, and take Chinese naval diplomacy to an entirely new level.

According to reports, there are plans to build 16 of these vessels, with at least six having already been commissioned - CNS Yan'an (106) is the sixth one to join the PLAN fleet in July 2022, following the CNS Nanchang (101), CNS Lhasa (102), CNS Anshan (104), CNS Wuxi (107), and CNS Dalian (105).

The CNS Nanchang (101), the first ship of this class (built in just 29 months), was presented to the general public for the first time at a naval parade held in April 2019 to celebrate the PLA Navy's 70th founding anniversary. It was delivered in January 2020 to the Northern Theatre Command or North Sea FleetThe second, the CNS Lhasa (102), went into service in March 2021, also with the North Sea Fleet. The third, the CNS Dalian (105), was commissioned in April last year for the Southern Theatre Command, or the South Sea Fleet.

The confirmation of Ya'nan commissioning came through an article published on PLAN's official WeChat account on Sunday (July 31, 2022), which said the "CNS Yan'an, a Type 055 destroyer, recently conducted a sea strike exercise in the South China Sea with CNS Xianning, a Type 054A-class guided-missile frigate."

Type 055 is powered by four indigenous 28 MW QC-280 gas turbines in combined gas and gas arrangement, i.e., COGAG with additional power may be provided by six 5 MW QD-50 gas turbines. QC-280 is a derivative of Ukrainian-built GT25000, which was apparently used in later 052C and also in the 052D destroyers. It is anticipated that the top speed will be somewhere near 30 knots.

The ship of this class is equipped with 112 vertical launch cells - 64 forward and 48 aft, with a width of .85m (2'9") and a depth of 9m (29'6") per cell. Each of which can fire surface-to-air missiles (SAM), antisubmarine rocket (ASROC), land attack cruise missiles (LACM), anti-ballistic missile (ABM) interceptors, and advanced anti-ship cruise missiles (ASCM). Its firepower is believed to be twice as powerful as that of the Type 052D class, which was the largest and most powerful surface combatant in the PLA Navy before the introduction of Type 055.

Also, Type 055 is most striking for integrating its sensors into a single mast, representing a substantial advance in the stealth qualities of the ship. It is reported to be the PLAN's first warship to combine dual-band planar radar arrays. The S-band planar arrays located below the bridge and on the reverse side of the superstructure are reported to be 40 percent larger than those fitted to the 052D. This is said to afford a gain in sensing distance of 60 percent, including for "stealthy targets." In addition, the X-band radar for tracking low-flying targets is high on the mast. While having just 1/6 of the planar area of the S-band radar, the X-band sensing can apparently "make up for any inadequacies in the S-band radars." Above the X-band radar is an electronic warfare system. The remaining sections of the integrated mast are occupied by navigation radar, tactical link, and ultrahigh-frequency (UHF) antennae. For anti-submarine warfare (ASW) sensors, this vessel has a bow-mounted sonar and a towed array system. It can also accommodate a pair of ASW helicopters — CAIC's Z-18F.

Outside of China, the Type 055 is frequently considered a class of cruiser due to its massive dimensions and substantial displacement. Based on satellite imagery, western researchers have estimated that it is around 21 meters in width and 180 meters in length. According to Li Jie, a senior researcher with the PLA Navy, the vessel displaces approximately 13,000 tonnes of water, similar to the displacement of a Ticonderoga-class cruiser from the United States Navy (US Navy).

PLAN has studied the defeat of Japan's carrier forces at Midway and concluded that these forces had inadequate escort capabilities, leaving them open to counterattack from the US Navy. It's unquestionably that Type 055 forms "a logical and vital escort for China's aircraft carriers." However, it does yet not match the US Navy's much larger destroyer fleet. But, Type 055 provides a remedy for a gap that has long plagued China's maritime defenses, especially the undersea warfare capabilities. But if there is one thing that can be predicted with absolute certainty, it is that large surface combatants such as Type 055 will become increasingly familiar sights in the world's oceans. The process of modernizing China's navy, which has been underway in earnest for the past three decades, is finally reaching its stride at this point.
