Pelosi Arrives in Taiwan

Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Xie Fengto summoned the American envoy Nicholas Burns (late Tuesday night) to lodge a stern protest over Pelosi's visit.

Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker of the House of Representatives in the United States, arrived in Taiwan late on Tuesday, defying China's litany of increasingly dire warnings and threats that have brought tensions between the two countries to new heights.


Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Xie Fengto summoned the American envoy Nicholas Burns (late Tuesday night) to lodge a stern protest over Pelosi's high-profile visit to Taipei. And it has also warned the United States that it will "pay a price" for its "mistakes." and asked to stop using the Taiwan issue to contain China in any form. 


On Wednesday, Pelosi stated that the US will not forsake Taiwan and that it is more important than ever for the United States to maintain its solidarity with the island nation. She also stated that America's desire to safeguard democracy is unwavering in Taiwan and the rest of the world.

"Today, our delegation… came to Taiwan to make unequivocally clear we will not abandon our commitment to Taiwan, and we are proud of our enduring friendship," Pelosi said while attending an event alongside the President of Taiwan, Tsai Ing-wen. "Taiwan is an example of resilience. Taiwan is crucial, and that is the message we are giving today… We will cooperate with Taiwan on all three issues- security, economy, governance," Pelosi added.


Note: Taiwan is seen as a renegade province of mainland China but will eventually reunite with it. Beijing has not ruled out the possibility of employing force to reunify the island with the mainland, and they have not done so either.
