Germany Signs Gas Deal with Qatar, To Reduce Dependence on Russia

Germany says it has signed an energy deal with Qatar to help the country get off of Russian gas.

On March 20, 2022, Germany has announced a long-term energy partnership with Qatar, as Berlin seeks to reduce its reliance on uncertain Russian energy sources in the aftermath of Moscow's invasion of Ukraine.

German Economic Minister Robert Habeck is on a two-nation visit to the Arabian Gulf, met with Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani in Doha. "Although we might still need Russian gas this year, in the future it won't be so anymore. And this is only the start,"  Habeck said during the meeting.

Germany, Europe's largest economy, has long relied on Russian energy supplies and has been reluctant to sanction Moscow for its aggressive actions in Eastern Europe. As a result, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has moved closer to the United States and other Western leaders to punish Russia. He has also said that Germany needs to diversify its energy sources.

Scholz said last month that a key document needed to get the $11 billion Nord Stream 2 natural gas pipeline from Russia to Germany approved would be withdrawn. Essentially putting an end to the long-awaited but contentious project for the time being.

Germany intends to import LNG from Qatar via ships. However, there are no terminals to receive them due to the long-standing reliance on pipeline gas. Germany has announced plans to construct two additional LNG terminals, but they are unlikely to be completed before 2026.
