According to the latest media reports, Pakistan Air Force (PAF) is expected to add 50 JF-17 Block III  fighter jets next month. The jets are built jointly with China to replace old aircraft and upgrade capability against India's missile defense system. A rollout ceremony was held in December 2022 and the new JF-17 jets will fly at the Pakistan national day's military parade on March 23.

JF-17 Thunder, an advanced, light-weight, all-weather, multi-role fighter aircraft with air-to-air and air-to-surface combat features, was developed jointly by the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC) and the Chengdu Aircraft Industry Corporation (CAC) in China. Pakistan and China embarked on a project to build the latest fighter and succeeded in 2003 to roll out the first JF-17 prototype aircraft. It was formally inducted into the PAF in 2007. It was being completely built at the PAC which so far has delivered nearly 120 JF-17 Block I and II. The latest 50 are the Block III.

The first JF-17 Block III prototype (serial 3000) took to the skies for its maiden flight over Chengdu in December 2019. The airframes, front fuselage, wings, and vertical stabilizer were built by the state-owned Pakistan Aeronautical Complex. Other components were supplied by China's Chengdu Aircraft Corporation, a subsidiary of the state-owned Aviation Industry Corporation of China. All assembly takes place in Pakistan.

The latest jets are with a modern radar system, upgraded sensors, software, and engine to adapt to rapidly evolving technologies. It is also integrated with IIR-guided PL-10 high off-boresight (HOB) air-to-air missiles (AAMs) with an improved capability, which means they do not have to be pointing in any specific direction to target an adversary. The aircraft can fire from whatever position, and its missiles will adjust thrust, speed, and trajectory to hit targets. This greatly enhances PAF operability.

As far as the powerplant is concerned, Block III is powered by a Russian RD-93MA engine. It can produce a maximum thrust of 9,300 kgf (kilogram-force), significantly greater than the existing RD-93 engine used on Pakistan's JF-17 fighter, which can produce a maximum thrust of 8,300kgf. Interestingly, the RD-93 has a connection to India. The RD-93 is developed from the RD-33 engine that powers the MiG-29UPG fighters of the Indian Air Force and MiG-29K jets of the Indian Navy. India operates over 60 MiG-29UPG jets and about 40 MiG-29K fighters.
