On December 29, 2021, Pakistan's Minister of Interior, Sheikh Rashid, at a rally in Rawalpindi, has confirmed the acquisition of at least 25 Chinese Chengdu J-10C (possibly, the export version J-10CP) fighter jets for the Pakistan Air Force (PAF). According to Rashid, the jets will execute a flyover on Yaum-e-Pakistan (Pakistan Day), scheduled on March 23, 2022.

The J-10C aircraft (along with J-11B) were part of the Shaheen-IX China-Pakistan joint air exercise in December 2020 at PAF's newest airbase in Bholari (Sindh), where experts (from PAF) had the opportunity to witness the capabilities of the fighter jets from close quarters. Both J-10C and J-11B; simulated India's Dassault Rafale and Sukhoi Su-30MKI jets, respective mock air battles.

J-10C is currently powered by a Russian engine (Lyulka Saturn AL-31FN) giving it a maximum static thrust of approximately 123 kN. A variant of the same engine is also assembled in India - AL-31FP; for its Sukhois. But, the key differences in the Chinese J-10C engine iteration include slightly more thrust, and the gearbox being relocated from the top to the bottom of the engine. In the future, China intends to incorporate the Shenyang WS-10 ("Taihang") engine to replace Russian ones.

Besides that, the fighter features a "tail-less canard delta" wing configuration, governed by fly-by-wire flight controls and sports an AESA fire control radar. It is made of metal alloys and composite materials for high strength and low weight airframes. Also, J-10C uses a diverter-less intake that does not require a splitter plate and may reduce radar cross signature.

From armament's point of view, the fighter has 11 hardpoints which provide a provision for 5,600 kg (12,300 lb) of either missiles and bombs, drop-tanks containing fuel, or other equipment such as avionics pods can be attached. The internal armament consists of a Gryazev-Shipunov GSh-23 twin-barrel cannon, located underneath the port side of the intake. Air-to-air missiles deployed may include short-range air-to-air missiles such as PL-10, medium-range radar-guided air-to-air missiles such as the PL-15, unguided and precision-guided munitions such as laser-guided bombs, air-to-surface missiles such as KD-88, anti-ship missiles such as the YJ-91A.
