Vitol Chief Named New Silk Road CEO of the Year in Category of ‘Trading’ 2020

Russell Hardy, Chief Executive Officer of Vitol, a leader in the global energy sector, has been named as The Aramco Trading New Silk Road CEO of the Year 2020 in the category ofTrading. He was chosen by an international selection committee of peers made up of top energy industry executives.


The New Silk Road CEO of the Year Awards, founded in 2017 in partnership with the Government of Fujairah and supported by Aramco Trading, was conceived to identify and celebrate the pioneering industry leaders who are spearheading the transformation of energy markets – Trading, Refining, Storage, Shipping and Ports – across this ancient trading route connecting Asia with the Middle East & Africa, which is literally changing the direction of international energy flows.


Russell has over 30 years’ experience in the oil industry. He joined Vitol in 1993 from BP and has held a number of trading and management roles in Singapore and London. He was a member of the Executive Committee from 2007 and was Vitol’s CEO EMEA with oversight of the company’s regional trading activity, before becoming CEO in 2018. Russell holds a MEng in Chemical Engineering from Imperial College, London.


“To arrive at the final winner, a group of renowned industry leaders were invited to join the International Selection Committee to independently nominate, verify and evaluate the original list of 50 nominees, which they did with great competence even in this year of the COVID pandemic,” said Ibrahim Al-Buainain, President & CEO, Aramco Trading Co., and Chairman of the 2020 Selection Committee. “Russell is a highly respected figure in the global trading industry, a worthy winner who leads a firm that is the gold standard in our industry,” said Al-Buainain.


The annual New Silk Road CEO of the Year awards are Held under the Patronage of H.H. Hamad bin Mohammad Al-Sharqi, Member of the Supreme Council & Ruler of Fujairah, UAE, with a 2020 Selection Committee that included Mr. Roger Chia Kim Piow, Chairman & MD, Rotary Group of Companies; SA; Datuk Md Arif Mahmood, Executive Vice President & CEO of Downstream, PETRONAS; Mr. Martin Fraenkel, President, S&P Global Platts, and Capt. Mousa Murad, Managing Director, Port of Fujairah. Previous winners include H.E. Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, Minister of State & Group CEO, Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, and Mr. Thomas Waymel, President Trading & Shipping, Total Oil Trading.

Vitol is an energy and commodities company; its primary business is the trading and distribution of energy products globally – it trades over eight million barrels per day of crude oil and products and, at any time, has 250 ships transporting its cargoes. The Class of 2020 winners will be presented with their Awards during the 11th edition of the virtual “Global” UAE Energy Forum on January 13th, 2021.
