On November 5, 2019, Abu Dhabi’s Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammad bin Zayed al-Nahyan and the deputy supreme commander of United Arab Emirates (UAE)'s armed forces announced the formation of a government-controlled defense industry conglomerate — EDGE — meant to position the country as a global player in advanced defense technologies.

EDGE will incorporate 25 private companies and subsidiaries of government-owned Emirates Defense Industries Company (EDIC), Emirates Advanced Investments Group (EAIG) and Tawazun Holding.

Faisal Al Bannai is selected to run EDGE as both chief executive and managing director. He was named because of his "startup background". He is the founder of Axiom Telecom and former managing director at DarkMatter, a UAE cybersecurity firm.

According to Bannai, EDGE is "established with a core mandate to disrupt an antiquated military industry generally stifled by red tape, Edge is set to bring products to market faster and at more cost-effective price points."

“The conglomerate will manage effectively the five clusters it has, through the chief executive of each entity who will report to the chief executive of the cluster within the conglomerate,” Al Bannai told Defense News. Those five focus areas are platforms and systems; missiles and weapons; cyber defense; electronic warfare and intelligence; and mission support.
