On November 11, 2019, just before midnight, Russian hacker Aleksey Burkov was extradited to the United States (U.S.) as per the decision is given by Justice Minister Amir Ohana. Burkov was brought to Ben-Gurion airport (Natbag, Tel Aviv) and handed over to the American authorities, for his flight to the U.S.

A day before, a panel of three Israeli supreme court justices rejected Burkov's appeal of Justice Minister Ohana's decision to order his extradition to the U.S. The panel was led by Supreme Court President Esther Hayut and Justices Yitzhak Amit and Ofer Grosskopf.

Burkov, a Russian citizen wanted by the U.S. on suspicion of cybercrimes (charged for running two fraud websites), was arrested in an Israeli airport in 2015 at the request of Interpol and later his extradition was approved by an Israeli court in 2017. He was on holiday with his girlfriend at the time of his arrest.

Russia last month offered Israel to exchange Burkov for Naama Issachar, a U.S.-Israeli citizen sentenced to seven and a half years in a Russian prison on drug-smuggling charges. Issachar’s family had filed a request to the High Court of Justice to request a delay to Burkov’s extradition, but her mother later asked that the petition be withdrawn.

STATEMENT ISSUED BY RUSSIAN EMBASSY IN ISRAEL (Dated: November 11, 2019)

“We regret the decision of Israeli’s High Court of Justice to turn down Mr. Burkov’s appeal on his extradition to [the United States]. This decision constitutes a breach of his rights as well as Israel’s international obligations. This step does not contribute to the development of [Russia-Israel] relations.”
