Hegseth is tasked with assessing the initial phase within 45 days, with the authority to expand operations to additional federal lands as needed. Notably, the order excludes Native American reservations, a nod to tribal sovereignty that has been cautiously welcomed by indigenous leaders. Supporters of the directive argue that it fills a critical gap in border enforcement. “The president is doing what he promised: securing our country,” said Tom Homan, a former acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, in a recent interview. He dismissed concerns about overreach, insisting that the military’s role is narrowly tailored to support, not supplant, civilian agencies.
