Divesting Instagram and WhatsApp would be no small feat—Meta has spent years weaving their tech and data into its ecosystem, from cross-posting features to shared ad platforms. The trial’s outcome could ripple far beyond Meta’s Menlo Park headquarters. A government win might chill Big Tech’s appetite for acquisitions, a double-edged sword in Silicon Valley. Startups often rely on buyouts for funding and growth, and venture capitalists bank on hefty exits. Curtailing these deals could starve innovation, some argue, or force founders to seek riskier, independent paths. Yet others see a breakup as a chance to reinvigorate competition, giving smaller players room to challenge Meta’s grip. Consumers might benefit from apps forced to prioritize privacy or quality over ad revenue, though untangling Meta’s platforms could disrupt the seamless experience users expect.
Meta’s fate is far from sealed. Appeals could drag the case into the late 2020s, delaying any divestitures. The social media landscape has already shifted since the FTC’s lawsuit began—TikTok’s meteoric rise and Instagram Reels’ counterpunch show how fast markets evolve. Meta points to this churn as proof it’s no monopolist, while the FTC argues these acquisitions locked in power that still lingers.
