Putin Warns Ukraine War Is Going Global, Cites Hypersonic Missile Test

Russian President Vladimir Putin stated on Thursday (21 November) that the conflict in Ukraine is evolving into a global confrontation, accusing Western nations of exacerbating the situation by supplying Kyiv with advanced weaponry. In a televised address, he announced that Russia had tested a new medium-range hypersonic missile, framing it as a response to recent Ukrainian strikes on Russian territory. Putin warned of decisive retaliation, emphasizing that Russia would not hesitate to respond forcefully.

Putin alleged that Ukraine used US-made ATACMS and British Storm Shadow missiles in recent attacks on Russian targets, including a command center in Kursk, resulting in casualties. While asserting that these strikes would not influence the overall trajectory of the war, he issued a stern warning to nations supporting such attacks. "The West must think carefully," he said, cautioning that Russia reserves the right to retaliate against those enabling strikes on its facilities. "If anyone doubts our right to strike back, they are wrong. There will always be a response," he added.

Russia recently tested its hypersonic missile, nicknamed 'Oreshnik' (the hazel), on a defense facility in Dnipro. This test is significant as it marks a new phase in Russia's military capabilities and willingness to use them in the Ukraine conflict. President Vladimir Putin claimed the strike successfully targeted Ukraine's missile production enterprise, framing it as a warning to Western allies. The escalation comes in response to the U.S. approval for Ukraine to use long-range missiles against Russian targets, a move Putin condemned as dangerously escalating the conflict. 'From that moment, what was a regional conflict has acquired global dimensions,' he stated, accusing the U.S. of pushing toward a broader confrontation.

Putin also criticized the U.S. for withdrawing from the 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, a landmark arms control agreement that banned the use of certain types of missiles. He accused Washington of undermining global security by resuming the development of intermediate-range missiles, which were prohibited under the treaty. Despite Russia controlling critical parts of Ukrainian territory, including Crimea and areas of Donbas, Kyiv's resistance, strengthened by Western military aid, has remained fierce. While Putin dismissed the idea that Western weapon supplies could alter the war's outcome, he warned of the significant risks posed by further escalation in the conflict.

Russia has voluntarily refrained from deploying certain types of missiles in the past. Still, Putin cautioned that any future actions will be contingent on the decisions made by Western nations. He emphasized that Russia's military strategy will be directly influenced by how the West continues to engage in the ongoing conflict. As the war enters its second year, the situation has become increasingly tense, with global security dynamics under significant strain. There are growing concerns that the conflict could escalate further, potentially drawing NATO and other major world powers into a broader confrontation. The continued support of Ukraine by Western countries has only heightened these fears.
