Today, Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar hosted Japan’s Defence Minister Minoru Kihara and Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa for the third Japan-India "2+2" Foreign and Defence Ministerial meeting at Hyderabad House in New Delhi. This crucial dialogue signifies the deepening strategic ties between the two countries, particularly amid the rapidly evolving dynamics of the Indo-Pacific region. The meeting underscored the importance of a collaborative approach to security and regional stability, highlighting how India and Japan are poised to play pivotal roles in shaping the future of this critical area.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar opened the discussions by emphasizing the significance of the India-Japan relationship, describing it as a "special strategic and global partnership" that has significantly expanded over the past decade. He highlighted the shared interests and activities that form the backbone of this alliance, especially in light of the current volatile global landscape. His remarks pointed to the increasing necessity of such partnerships in navigating a world where predictability has given way to uncertainty, underscoring the mutual benefits of India's and Japan's alignment on various strategic fronts.

Minister Jaishankar’s focus on "reliable partnerships with substantial convergences" reflects a strategic alignment that goes beyond traditional diplomatic ties. The partnership is increasingly defined by a shared commitment to upholding a free, open, and rules-based Indo-Pacific—a vision closely aligned with India's Act East policy and Japan's own regional security interests. The emphasis on these convergences demonstrates a forward-looking approach that aims not just at bilateral gains but also at contributing to regional stability and prosperity.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that the India-Japan partnership is rooted in shared democratic values and a commitment to the rule of law. He outlined India's ambitions to achieve developed country status by 2047, noting that enhanced defence capabilities would play a crucial role in realizing this vision. Singh reaffirmed the importance of the defence partnership with Japan, emphasizing its role in promoting freedom, inclusivity, and transparency across the Indo-Pacific. His remarks underscore the notion that a strong defence relationship with Japan is integral to India’s broader strategic objectives.

Japanese Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa also highlighted the shared vision for a stable Indo-Pacific. In a veiled reference to China’s assertive military maneuvers in the region, she reaffirmed Japan's commitment to oppose unilateral attempts to change the status quo by force. This statement underscores the mutual resolve of both nations to uphold a free and open international order based on the rule of law. Kamikawa’s comments further emphasize the importance of the India-Japan alliance in ensuring regional peace and prosperity amid growing geopolitical challenges.

The joint statement released after the meeting further cemented this resolve, with both sides unequivocally condemning terrorism and violent extremism in all forms. The ministers called for concerted actions against all UN-designated terrorist groups, including Al Qaeda, ISIS/Daesh, Lashkar-e-Tayyiba (LeT), and Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM), and their proxies. This strong stance on counterterrorism reflects a shared understanding of the security challenges facing both nations and underscores the necessity of coordinated efforts to address these threats comprehensively.

As the dialogue concluded, both countries acknowledged the significance of such meetings in light of recent global developments and emphasized the need to adapt to changing geopolitical realities. The reaffirmation of their commitment to deepening cooperation in defence and strategic affairs marks another milestone in bilateral relations.
