China Grand Automotive Services Group Co. Ltd., a prominent player in China's automotive sector, is poised to be delisted from the Shanghai Stock Exchange following an extended period of trading below par value. The company’s stock (600297.SH) closed at 0.78 yuan per share on Wednesday, marking the 20th consecutive trading session below the critical 1 yuan threshold required to avoid delisting under market regulations.

If the delisting process proceeds, the company will become the second car dealer to be removed from the stock exchange within a year, following Pang Da Automobile Trade's delisting in June 2023.

Established in 1999, China Grand Automotive has been a key figure in the country’s auto dealership industry. With over 730 outlets nationwide, the company sells premium vehicles under brands like BMW, Audi, and Volvo. In 2023, the company, controlled by Xinjiang Guanghui Industry Investment Group, delivered 713,500 vehicles, generating 138 billion yuan in revenue. It ranked second only to Zhongsheng Group Holdings in sales.

The car dealer reported a net profit of 392 million yuan last year, a significant turnaround from a net loss of 2.66 billion yuan in 2022. Despite these achievements, the company has faced significant challenges recently, exacerbated by a fierce price war that has plagued the automotive market since early 2023.

The decision to delist will impact nearly 100,000 investors who have stakes in the company, reflecting broader concerns about the operational pressures industry players face amidst slowing sales and escalating market competition. The delisting process underscores the volatility and intense competition within the world’s largest car market, where even established entities like China Grand Automotive are not immune to financial turbulence.

The company’s struggles highlight broader issues within China’s automotive sector, where companies grapple with declining sales and profit margins amid economic uncertainties and shifting consumer preferences. Electric vehicle penetration in China, the largest market for both conventional and electric cars, has increased dramatically from about 1% a decade ago to 40% today. This surge comes as millions of gasoline vehicles are replaced by battery-powered ones equipped with autonomous driving technology and digital cockpits.

Currently, most EV brands, including Tesla and start-ups like Nio and Xpeng, build and operate their own sales networks, using e-commerce platforms to attract young customers. China's automotive sector, struggling with overcapacity, faces challenges in improving profitability amid an intensifying price war.

Among the leading players, only BYD, the world's top-selling EV manufacturer, and Li Auto, a major competitor to Tesla in China, have reported profits so far this year. In April, Goldman Sachs forecasted in a research report that if BYD reduces its prices by 10,300 yuan per vehicle, equivalent to 7% of the company's average selling price, it could push the nation's EV industry into losses this year.

As China Grand Automotive faces this challenging period, stakeholders and industry analysts are closely monitoring the situation, expecting possible restructuring efforts or strategic changes to stabilize the company’s market position. There is speculation that the company might explore partnerships, diversify its product offerings, or adopt new technologies to strengthen its competitiveness and regain investor confidence. The outcome of these efforts will be crucial in determining China Grand Automotive's future trajectory in the rapidly evolving automotive industry.
