Israel Reports Iranian Drone and Missile Launches, Shuts Airspace

On Saturday evening (April 13), the Israeli military disclosed that Iran had launched 200 drones and missiles toward Israel, with Iran's state media confirming the launch of numerous drones. Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, the spokesperson for the Israeli army, noted that it would be some time before the drones reached their destination and affirmed that Israel was ready to respond. 

Iran had previously issued threats of retaliation against Israel following an airstrike in Syria that resulted in the deaths of two Iranian generals. While Israel has refrained from commenting on the airstrike, Iran has accused Israel of orchestrating it.

Israeli aviation authorities announced the closure of the country's airspace to all flights starting from 12:30 a.m. local time (5:30 p.m. EDT). The drone strike on Saturday night marked the first instance of Iran launching a large-scale military attack on Israel, despite decades of hostility dating back to the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

According to a statement from Iran's state-run IRNA news agency, the country's paramilitary Revolutionary Guard admitted to launching "dozens of drones and missiles towards the occupied territories and positions of the Zionist regime," without providing further details.

The White House pledged unspecified support for Israel's defense against the ongoing attack. National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson stated, "The United States will stand with the people of Israel and support their defense against these threats from Iran."


President Joe Biden was scheduled to hold a principals meeting of the National Security Council to address the ongoing attack, as announced by the White House. Biden had shortened a weekend trip to his beach house in Delaware to return to the White House and oversee the situation.

Earlier on Saturday, the Israeli military announced the cancellation of school and imposed restrictions on public gatherings, limiting them to no more than 1,000 people as a precautionary measure. Hagari emphasized that Israel is fully prepared with both defensive and offensive measures. He also highlighted the close cooperation with the U.S. and other regional partners.

General Erik Kurilla, the head of the U.S. Central Command, has been in Israel recently to coordinate with Israeli officials regarding the Iranian threats.

Israel possesses multiple layers of air defense capable of intercepting multiple threats, from long-range missiles to UAVs and short-range rockets. Hagari noted the effectiveness of Israel's air defense system but cautioned that it's not infallible, urging the public to heed safety instructions.

In recent days, Iranian officials, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, have issued threats against Israel in response to the Syria strike. Despite previous actions such as targeted killings of nuclear scientists and sabotage campaigns on atomic sites, Iran has generally refrained from direct attacks on Israel, instead opting for indirect targeting through proxy forces against Israeli or Jewish-linked sites. 

Israel's conflict with Hamas in the Gaza Strip has reignited longstanding tensions in the Middle East, and any fresh assault carries the risk of amplifying the conflict into a broader regional war. Additionally, the National News Agency of Lebanon documented intense Israeli air attacks and bombardment across several areas in southern Lebanon subsequent to the deployment of drones from Iran. Over the past half-year, the Lebanese militant organization Hezbollah, backed by Iran, has been engaged in confrontations with Israeli troops along the border region.

Earlier on Saturday, operatives from Iran's paramilitary Revolutionary Guard descended from a helicopter onto a container ship linked to Israel near the Strait of Hormuz and took control of the vessel.

Iran’s state-operated IRNA reported that a specialized naval unit of the Revolutionary Guard executed the operation on the Portuguese-flagged MSC Aries (IMO: 9857169), a container ship associated with London-based Zodiac Maritime. IRNA stated that the Guard intends to bring the vessel into Iranian territorial waters.

Zodiac Maritime is affiliated with the Zodiac Group, owned by Israeli billionaire Eyal Ofer. Zodiac declined to comment and directed inquiries to MSC, headquartered in Geneva. MSC acknowledged the seizure and confirmed the presence of 25 crew members aboard the ship.


Adrienne Watson, spokesperson for the White House National Security Council, noted that the crew consisted of individuals from India, the Philippines, Pakistan, Russia, and Estonia, urging Iran to release both the crew and the vessel.

A defense official from the Middle East, speaking anonymously to discuss intelligence matters, provided video footage of the incident to The Associated Press. The video depicts Iranian commandos rappelling onto a stack of containers on the ship’s deck. This footage aligns with the known details of the MSC Aries. The commandos descended from what appeared to be a Soviet-era Mil Mi-17 helicopter, previously utilized by both the Guard and Iranian-backed Houthis in Yemen for ship raids.
