Deloitte Survey: Fast Generative AI Adoption Demands Organizational Change

Today, the Deloitte AI Institute™ introduced the latest edition of its quarterly report, titled "The State of Generative AI in the Enterprise: Now Determines Next." This report delves into the current state of Generative AI adoption within organizations and explores the measures being taken to expedite and expand its real value generation. Based on a survey conducted among nearly 2,000 respondents ranging from directors to C-suite executives worldwide, the report sheds light on the diverse levels of self-reported Generative AI expertise among participants, all of whom possess experience with AI and are in the process of piloting or implementing Generative AI initiatives within their organizations.

"Business leaders are zeroing in on how Generative AI can help them meet their goals for efficiency and cost savings, and many are looking into reinvesting savings in innovation and growth use cases — it is clear getting to scale, accurately measuring progress and selecting the right use cases will be critical factors in achieving value generation," said Costi Perricos, Deloitte Global office of Generative AI leader. "Although financial ROI is important, value drivers such as innovation, strategic positioning, and competitive differentiation can be even more important."

Organizations Adapt Talent Strategies for Generative AI Era

Organizations are now adapting their talent strategies to accommodate the demands of the Generative AI era. However, a shortage of skilled personnel hinders the potential for scaling. According to the survey, nearly 37% of leaders acknowledged that their organizations were only marginally prepared or not prepared at all to address talent-related concerns associated with Generative AI adoption. Nevertheless, proactive measures are being taken. A significant majority of survey respondents, nearly three-quarters, expressed their intention to modify their talent strategies within the next two years in response to Generative AI. This adjustment primarily involves restructuring work processes and investing in upskilling and reskilling initiatives. Furthermore, many organizations are considering expanding their workforce in the short term to support their Generative AI endeavors. Specifically, 39% of organizations plan to increase their headcount within the next 12 months, while 38% intend to maintain their current staffing levels.

Growing Trust in Generative AI with Transparency Focus

Trust in Generative AI has experienced growth, particularly among organizations well-versed in AI that prioritize transparency. However, distrust remains a significant obstacle to the widespread adoption of Generative AI, highlighting the importance of building trust for successful scaling efforts. A substantial majority (72%) of respondents noted an increase in their organization's trust in all forms of AI since the emergence of Generative AI in 2022. Despite this rise in trust, only 36% of organizations incorporate the measurement of worker trust and engagement into their talent strategy, and less than half of respondents prioritize processes aimed at fostering trust in Generative AI to a significant extent. Trust and risk concerns have not deterred adoption among Generative AI experts. Organizations with advanced expertise increasingly focus on transparency with employees and ensuring input data quality and outputs' reliability.

Top Desired Benefits: Efficiency and Productivity

Efficiency and productivity continue to rank as the most sought-after advantages of Generative AI adoption. Similar to findings from the initial quarterly survey released in January, enhancing efficiency and productivity remains the predominant anticipated benefit of Generative AI adoption. While many organizations report experiencing some degree of these benefits, they have yet to realize them significantly. However, organizations possessing extensive expertise in Generative AI report achieving their anticipated benefits to a much greater degree. Among these organizations, 70% have reported significant improvements in existing products and services, while 63% have substantially fostered innovation and growth. With the cost savings generated through Generative AI initiatives, organizations pursue value capture on multiple fronts. Forty-five percent of respondents plan to reinvest savings into innovation opportunities, while 43% intend to enhance business operations.

Rapid Generative AI Adoption: Risk of Falling Behind

The adoption rate for Generative AI is accelerating, posing a risk for organizations that fail to keep up with the pace. The momentum of Generative AI adoption shows no signs of slowing down. According to the latest survey data, almost half (47%) of all respondents indicate they are rapidly advancing in their adoption efforts. Among those with extensive expertise, this figure rises to 73%. These proficient users are now transitioning towards scaling up their adoption efforts, extending their usage across various functions. They are also increasing investment in technological infrastructure and expanding access to Generative AI tools across their workforce. Failure to align with this swift progression may result in organizations falling behind in the rapidly evolving landscape of Generative AI adoption.
