Indian Air Force Inducts First C-295 Aircraft into '11 Squadron'

On Monday, September 25th, the Indian Air Force (IAF) officially welcomed the first of its 56 Airbus C-295 (formerly known as CASA C-295) medium-lift tactical transport aircraft. The induction ceremony, led by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, instilled confidence in the belief that this acquisition would significantly boost the IAF's capabilities. This milestone event signifies the commencement of a new era that will bring substantial improvements to the IAF's airlift capabilities.

The esteemed "11 Squadron (The Rhinos)," based at Vadodara, is the first IAF squadron to be equipped with the advanced C-295 aircraft, set to replace the aging Avro-748 fleet. The C-295 made its arrival at Vadodara on September 20, just a week after Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari took custody of the aircraft following its journey from Airbus' Seville facility in Spain.

The C-295 is a medium-lift tactical aircraft renowned for its ability to operate from unprepared landing grounds, a valuable feature for diverse operational scenarios. The replacement of the HS-748 Avro aircraft with the C-295 is expected to significantly bolster the IAF's medium-lift tactical capabilities. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh underscored the importance of the defense and aerospace sectors in achieving self-reliance for India in the coming years during his address at the induction ceremony held at Hindan Air Force Station, Ghaziabad.

Under the terms of the contract, the first 16 of the 56 C-295 aircraft will be delivered to the IAF in a 'fly-away' condition. The remaining 40 aircraft will be manufactured in India by Tata Advanced Systems Ltd at their Vadodara facility as part of a ₹21,935-crore deal inked two years ago with Airbus Defence and Space.

In addition to the C-295 induction, Minister Rajnath Singh also inaugurated "Bharat Drone Shakti 2023," a groundbreaking drone exhibition and display at Hindan Air Base in Ghaziabad. This unique event showcased over 75 start-ups from across the country, highlighting the Ministry of Defence's commitment to fostering innovation and technology in the drone industry.

Organized jointly by the IAF and the Drone Federation of India (DFI), "Bharat Drone Shakti 2023" featured a diverse range of drone military and civil applications through aerial and static demonstrations. This event aligns with the government's ambitious initiative to establish India as a major drone hub by 2030.

Notable dignitaries present at the exhibition included Minister of State for Civil Aviation and Road, Transport & Highways General (Dr) VK Singh (Retd), Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari, senior officers from all three services, Defence Attaches, officials from friendly foreign countries, and representatives of the Indian industry.

During their visit to Hindan Air Base, Rajnath Singh and other dignitaries were briefed on the latest in-house innovations of the IAF. These innovations encompassed a wide spectrum of projects, including a Hybrid Drone Detection System, an AI Engine for fault diagnosis, a Fly-By-Wire Tester, Stabilized Power Supply Trolleys, a QR Code-based Tool Crib management system, and modern teaching aids, highlighting the IAF's commitment to technological advancement and operational excellence.

The Airbus C295 is a highly versatile tactical transport aircraft capable of executing a wide array of missions. It is not limited to just one role but excels in various capacities, including troop and cargo transport, maritime patrol, airborne warning, surveillance and reconnaissance, armed close air support, medical evacuation, VIP transport, and even airborne firefighting.

In terms of operational capabilities, the C295 is tailored for military conditions. It can be deployed in austere locations with minimal reliance on ground support infrastructure, and it can navigate narrow runways as narrow as 12 meters wide thanks to its auto-reverse capability. The cargo hold, measuring 12.69 × 1.90 × 2.70 meters, is notably spacious, accommodating up to 71 soldiers, 24 stretchers with seven medical attendants, five standard cargo pallets, or three Land Rover-sized light vehicles. It's also suitable for paratrooper drops and cargo deployment on 88-inch-wide platforms.

The C-295's adaptability is a key feature, and it has been configured for various roles. Many operators have chosen to equip their aircraft for intelligence surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) missions, complete with advanced sensors like a multi-mission radar unit. It can even be transformed into a gunship to provide close air support to ground forces. Furthermore, the C-295 can handle electronic signals intelligence (ELINT), medical evacuation (MEDEVAC), and maritime patrol aircraft (MPA) duties. The availability of palletized equipment allows quick changes to transform the aircraft into a VIP transport, aerial refueling tanker, or water bomber.

Inside the cockpit, the C-295 boasts dual pilot and co-pilot controls. It features the Highly Integrated Avionics System (HIAS), based on Thales' digital Topdeck suite, as well as an Integrated Engine Data and Warning System for managing the engine and fuel systems. The avionics are designed to meet both civil and military standards, including the stringent FAR-25 requirements.

Propelling the C-295 are two Pratt & Whitney Canada PW127G turboprop engines, each delivering up to 2,645 SHP (1,972 kW). These engines are designed modular, facilitating maintenance and allowing up to 10,000 uninterrupted flight hours before servicing is required. The aircraft is equipped with six-bladed scimitar-shaped propellers featuring a diameter of 3.89 meters and constructed from composite materials.

The C-295 is fitted with a retractable tricycle undercarriage designed by Messier-Dowty. The main landing gear retracts into side fairings on the lower fuselage, while the forward landing gear resides beneath the cockpit in a dedicated alcove. This undercarriage is robust enough for operations from semi-prepared runways and includes oleo-pneumatic shock absorbers, differential braking via disc brakes, and an anti-skid system.
