XB-1 Supersonic Aircraft Achieves Key Milestones on Path to Historic First Flight

In a significant stride towards revolutionizing air travel, Boom Supersonic's XB-1, a pioneering supersonic technology demonstrator aircraft, has recently achieved several crucial milestones, propelling it closer to its historic maiden flight. XB-1 draws upon six decades of advancements in aviation technology, such as carbon fiber composites, state-of-the-art avionics, and digitally optimized aerodynamics, all in pursuit of sustainable supersonic travel.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has granted an experimental airworthiness certificate to XB-1, marking a pivotal moment in its journey. This certificate follows a comprehensive and meticulous aircraft inspection, affirming its readiness for the skies. Additionally, Boom has obtained letters of authorization permitting Chief Test Pilot Bill "Doc" Shoemaker and test pilot Tristan "Gepetto" Brandenburg to pilot XB-1, underlining the company's commitment to rigorous testing and safety.
Furthermore, Boom Supersonic has established letters of agreement with airspace authorities to facilitate XB-1's test flights over the Mojave desert. This airspace, steeped in aviation history, was where legendary pilot Captain Charles "Chuck" Yeager first shattered the sound barrier in the Bell X-1 and where the iconic Mach 3+ strategic reconnaissance SR-71 "Blackbird" took its inaugural flight in 1964.
XB-1's journey has been instrumental in shaping Boom's safety culture. The company's test pilots have dedicated countless hours to simulator-based evaluations, operations development, training, and human factors assessments, ensuring the highest levels of safety during the aircraft's development and flight. They also maintain flight proficiency in a T-38 trainer aircraft, which will be a chase plane for all XB-1 flight tests. Formation flying practice in the T-38 further fortifies safety measures.
Commenting on this remarkable progress, Bill "Doc" Shoemaker, Chief Test Pilot for Boom Supersonic, remarked, "It's fitting that XB-1 is now progressing toward first flight at the Mojave Air & Space Port, home to more than 50 first flights and other significant aviation events. I'm looking forward to flying XB-1 here, building on the achievements of other talented engineers and pilots who inspire us every day to make supersonic travel mainstream."
XB-1 boasts a cutting-edge design, featuring a carbon composite and titanium fuselage spanning an impressive 71 feet in length. Its distinctive ogive (modified delta) wing design enables secure takeoffs, landings, and smooth supersonic flight. Powered by three General Electric J85 engines, the aircraft generates a maximum thrust of 12,300 pounds of force (lbf).
This supersonic demonstrator aircraft emerged from Boom's hangar in Centennial, Colorado, in October 2020. Since then, exhaustive testing has been conducted on all internal subsystems. Notable upgrades, such as enhanced landing gear and supersonic engine intakes, have been integrated into XB-1, enhancing its performance and safety.
Throughout its development, XB-1 has played a pivotal role in validating Boom's innovative approach to aircraft design. Advanced tools like computational fluid dynamics (CFD) have been instrumental in fine-tuning the aircraft's capabilities—a critical component in developing Overture, Boom's sustainable supersonic airliner. Overture is designed to operate at Mach 1.7, approximately twice the speed of today's fastest airliners, and is committed to utilizing 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
