Nilekani Hails India's Digital Public Infrastructure

The Non-Executive Chairman and Co-Founder of Infosys, Nandan Nilekani, has put forth a visionary perspective on India's digital future. He envisions that the integration of digital public infrastructure (DPI) tools like Aadhaar, unified payments interface (UPI), and digilocker will act as catalysts in steering India away from fragmented, informal micro-economies towards a unified, formal, and high-productivity mega economy. In a speech at the B20 Summit, an influential engagement group within the G20, Nilekani painted a transformative trajectory for India's economic landscape.
Nilekani's forecast underscores the country's profound changes brought about by digital public infrastructure. He posits that India's metamorphosis from a disconnected, informal, and low-productivity economic landscape into a cohesive, formal, and highly productive mega-economy is on the horizon. This paradigm shift is expected to unfold over the next two decades, ushering in a new era of economic prosperity and technological advancement. 

Speaking at the B20 Summit, Nilekani expounded on this transformation, remarking, "Fundamentally, India is going from an offline, informal, low productivity, multiple set of micro-economies to a single online, formal, high-productivity mega economy, a trend that will continue over the next 20 years."
Nilekani further emphasized that DPI has paved the way for innovative solutions to societal challenges. This, in turn, enhances India's capability to leverage digital technology on a grand scale to effect transformative change across various domains of society.
As the founding chairman of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), the entity behind Aadhaar, Nilekani hails DPI as a paradigm of inclusive growth. He underscores its collaborative and equitable nature, grounded in the principle of democratizing opportunities for every individual, regardless of their geographical location.
Notably, Nilekani's optimism is wider than India's borders. He contends that India's unique model of digital public infrastructure is gaining global recognition and could serve as a template for approximately 50 countries worldwide in the coming five years. Acknowledgment from influential figures like Bill Gates and international institutions such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) reaffirms India's pioneering role in shaping the digital landscape.
Nilekani's vision is vital to the triumvirate of Aadhaar, Know Your Customer (KYC) procedures, and Jan-Dhan Yojana. He credits this trio with fostering financial inclusion in India. Nilekani elucidated, "The idea was to give a digital identity to everyone, and today 1.3 billion Indians have digital IDs. It provides online authentication of IDs with fingerprint, iris, OTPs, face. That system does 80 million transactions a day."
Reflecting on pivotal milestones, Nilekani highlighted 2016 as a transformative year. It marked the attainment of one billion Aadhaar cards and the launch of the groundbreaking UPI payment system. Nilekani also acknowledged the launch of Jio and the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) decision to initiate an account aggregator system during the same period.
An integral pillar of Nilekani's discourse is the UPI, which he has characterized it as the world's largest payment platform since its inception in 2016. The staggering statistic of 9.96 billion transactions monthly underscores its role in transforming India's digital payments landscape. Boasting a user base of 350 million, UPI enables digital transactions through QR codes at approximately 50 million merchants nationwide.
Nilekani extended his vision to encompass climate adaptation and mitigation. He believes that DPI's versatility is not limited to financial transactions but can be harnessed for addressing pressing global challenges. "From individual cash transfers to those affected by climate change to managing the electric vehicle charging station grid, DPI is an approach that has many uses for the challenges we face," he asserted.
Nilekani's insights resonate as a roadmap for India's digital metamorphosis. His optimism is palpable, reflecting the transformative power of technology and digital infrastructure. However, this trajectory must be underpinned by comprehensive frameworks addressing issues of accessibility, privacy, and security. As India navigates this digital terrain, a balance between aspiration and responsibility will be key in steering the nation towards a future where technology truly serves all strata of society.
