In March 2023, Iran will receive several Russian Sukhoi Su-35 fighter jets as part of a military order that also includes air defense systems, missile systems, and helicopters, according to Shahriar Heidari, a member of Iran's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission interviewed by the semi-official Tasnim news agency.

According to Hamidreza Azizi, an expert on geopolitics and security in the Middle East at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs, Heidari's remarks represent the first official acknowledgment that Iran expects to receive SU-35 fighter jets.

Earlier, multiple media outlets reported in late December 2022 that Russia was preparing to deliver Sukhoi Su-35s to Iran shortly. According to a report by Israel's Channel 12, the deal could include as many as twenty-four fourth-generation twin-engine, super-maneuverable jets intended initially for Egypt but thwarted by the United States. This necessitated a search for a new potential buyer, reportedly leading Moscow to Tehran. Before that, in September 2022, local media cited Iranian Air Force chief Hamid Vahedi stating that Iran is contemplating a purchase of Sukhoi Su-35 fighter jets from Russia.

It is speculated that some of the combat aircraft are expected to be stationed at Tactical Air Base (TAB) No: 8 of the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force (IRIAF), located in the central Iranian city of Isfahan.

On the other hand, Iran has been one of the few, if not the only, country to provide Russia with military support in Ukraine. With Russian missile stocks rapidly diminishing, Moscow has turned to Iran to quickly and cost-effectively halt Ukrainian military advances and the further loss of territory. According to reports, Russia has purchased several hundred Iranian drones, with an additional thousand on order.

In the past, Russia has been wary of giving Iran a military advantage in the region. Additionally, Russia's policy in the Middle East has always been based on maintaining a balance between Iran and its competitors, such as Saudi Arabia, Israel, and others. However, the relationship is heading into territory that has yet to be explored because of Moscow's growing reliance on Iran. This is due to the global isolation that Moscow is experiencing because of the Ukraine War.

About Sukhoi Su-35

The Sukhoi Su-35, also known as the Flanker-E, is a single-seat, twin-engine, supermaneuverable multirole fighter jet developed by the Russian aerospace company Sukhoi. It is a heavily upgraded version of the Su-27, with improved avionics, weapons systems, and aerodynamics.

One of the Su-35's key features is its advanced avionics suite, which includes a powerful radar system, a digital fly-by-wire system, and an advanced data link system. The radar system, known as the Irbis-E, is a phased array radar capable of detecting and tracking multiple targets simultaneously at long ranges. The digital fly-by-wire system allows the pilot to perform advanced maneuvers that would be impossible with a traditional mechanical system. The data link system allows the jet to share information with other aircraft and ground control units in real-time.

The jet also has several advanced weapon systems, including an internal 30mm cannon, a variety of air-to-air missiles, and air-to-ground missiles. It can also carry various external weapons, including bombs, rockets, and guided missiles. The Su-35 is also equipped with an advanced electronic warfare system, which allows it to detect and jam enemy radar and communications systems.

The Su-35's aerodynamics have also been significantly improved over the Su-27, with a new wing design and a thrust-vectoring engine system that allows it to perform advanced maneuvers, such as the "Cobra" and "Bell" maneuvers. It is also equipped with two powerful engines, the Saturn AL-41F1S, which gives it a high thrust-to-weight ratio and a top speed of around Mach 2.25 (1,500 mph).
