On November 15, two people were killed in the village of Przewodow, Poland, by a Russian-made missile, according to Warsaw, as the country's military prepared for a possible dramatic escalation of the conflict in Ukraine. However, Warsaw did not have conclusive evidence of who fired it, adding that Moscow's ambassador had been summoned to provide "immediate detailed explanations."

Polish spokesman Piotr Muller told reporters, "There has been a decision to raise the state-of-readiness of some combat units and other uniformed services." Poland is protected by NATO's commitment to collective defense -- enshrined in Article 5 of its founding treaty., Still, the alliance's response will likely be heavily influenced by whether the incident was accidental or intentional.

The Polish incident occurred after Russian missiles struck cities throughout Ukraine on Tuesday, including Lviv near the Polish border. Zelensky stated that the strikes resulted in losing power to around 10 million people, which triggered the shutting down of two nuclear power reactors. This has garnered worldwide condemnation, with European Union chief Charles Michel expressing "shock" and French President Emmanuel Macron requesting discussions at the ongoing G20 conference in Indonesia.

Joe Biden, in his call with Poland president Andrzej Duda, "expressed deep condolences for the loss of life in eastern Poland," according to a White House account of the conversation. Furthermore, the American president offered Poland "full US support for and assistance" with the investigation into the explosion.

U.S. State Department deputy spokesman Vedant Patel said the reports coming out of Poland were "incredibly concerning," adding that Washington was working to determine what happened and the appropriate next steps. The State Department is talking to a range of partners about the reports and is working with the Polish government, Patel told reporters at a regular news briefing.

Updated Narrative: On Wednesday (November 17, 2022), Poland, a NATO member, and the president of the military alliance stated that a missile strike in Polish farmland that resulted in the deaths of two individuals seemed to be an accident and was most likely launched by air defenses in the neighboring country of Ukraine. At the time, Russia was bombarding Ukraine as part of an attack that was wreaking havoc on Ukraine's power grid.

However, Ukrainian President Zelenskyy said Wednesday on Ukrainian TV that his top military commanders had assured him that “it was not our missile and not our missile strike” that was the cause of the incident.
