Rishi Sunak — The First British Prime Minister of South Asian Descent

42-year-old Rishi Sunak is set to become Britain's next prime minister after winning the race to lead the U.K.'s ruling Conservative Party. He will be the first prime minister of South Asian descent—and the youngest in more than 200 years.

Sunak, a former chancellor of the exchequer, the equivalent of the Secretary of Treasury in the United States, will be the first person of color and the first Hindu to hold the top job in the country. He secured the nomination after his only remaining rival, former Defense Minister Penny Mordaunt, dropped out of the race; former Prime Minister Boris Johnson withdrew on Sunday evening. Sunak has stated that bringing "stability and unity" to the country is his number one priority.

After a meeting with King Charles III on Tuesday, he will formally take over as Prime Minister, succeeding outgoing Prime Minister Liz Truss, whose tenure lasted only six weeks. Truss stepped down as leader of the United Kingdom after the collapse of the pound, and the destruction of her government's credibility was brought about by her tax cuts and spending plans, which Sunak had previously referred to as a "fairy tale." 

The new prime minister will take over an economy on the verge of a severe recession, with inflation rates higher than 10% and interest rates continuing to rise. Many people find it challenging to keep up with the rising cost of living because wages are not keeping pace with inflation. Soaring energy prices and expected increases in interest rates are significant sources of concern in this regard.

Political pandits are calling his rise "astonishingly rapid."  The son of a family that moved to the United Kingdom in the 1960s, he received his education at Oxford and Stanford before beginning a career in investment banking at Goldman Sachs. He later made his fortune in the hedge fund industry. At Stanford, he acquainted the woman who would later become his wife, Akshata Murty, the daughter of the Indian billionaire N. R. Narayana Murthy.

Reportedly, it is believed that the couple has amassed a combined fortune worth around $820 million, which is approximately the same as or slightly more than double the wealth of King Charles III and Queen consort Camilla.
