Airbus-Tata Consortium to Manufacture C-295 Transport Aircraft in India

According to the announcement by the Indian government on Thursday, a consortium led by the Tata group and Airbus will manufacture 40 C-295 transport aircraft in the state of Gujarat. On October 30, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will travel to Vadodara to lay the foundation stone of the new facility as part of a  $2.5 billion (Rs 21,935-crore) deal.

The laying of the foundation stone is to take forward the last year's agreement which India's Ministry of Defence (MoD) signed with Airbus to replace the Indian Air Force's (IAF's) legacy fleet of Avro HS-748 aircraft. The MoD has also signed an offset contract with M/s Airbus Defence and Space through which M/s Airbus will discharge its offset obligations by directly purchasing eligible products and services from Indian Offset Partners (IOPs).

According to the terms of the contract, Airbus will deliver the first 16 aircraft in a condition known as "fly-away" from its final assembly line in Seville, which is located in Spain. As part of an industrial partnership between Airbus and TASL, the subsequent 40 aircraft will be manufactured and assembled in India by Tata Advanced Systems (TASL). This partnership will take place in India.

This so-called "Avro replacement program" will mark the first time a private sector firm will build an entire aircraft in India, developing a whole industrial ecosystem: from manufacturing, assembly, testing, and qualification to delivery and maintenance throughout the aircraft's lifecycle. All the C-295s will be handed over to the IAF in transport configuration and equipped with an indigenous Electronic Warfare Suite.

Salient features of C-295

  • The C-295MW is a 5-10 tonne transport aircraft; designed and initially manufactured by the Spanish aerospace company CASA. It has contemporary technology that will replace the aging Avro aircraft of the IAF.
  • The C-295 is powered by two Pratt & Whitney PW-127 turbo-prop engines, a part of the PW-100 family.
  • The C-295 can transport up to 71 troops or 50 paratroopers with battle loads. In addition, they can ferry supplies to locations that are not accessible to the IAF's heavier transport aircraft, such as the C-17 Globemaster III, C-130J Super Hercules, or Ilyushin 76.
  • The C-295 has been acquired by various nations such as Spain, Egypt, Poland, Canada, Brazil, Mexico, and Portugal. It has also participated in numerous international operations, including those in the former Yugoslavia, Afghanistan, Iraq, Lebanon, and Chad.
