In Baghdad, at least 15 people were killed in ongoing clashes between Iraqi security forces and Shia cleric followers.

An influential Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr announced on Monday that he would resign from his position in Iraqi politics. This prompted hundreds of his followers to take to the streets of Baghdad, where they broke through barriers protecting the Green Zone, which is the location of the Iraqi Parliament and other government offices.  

According to accounts from The New York Times, the Iraqi security personnel that opened fire on the demonstrators caused the deaths of over 15 protestors and injuries to over one hundred others. In response to the violence, Mustafa al-Kadhimi, Iraq's interim prime minister and an ally of Sadr, declared a curfew to be in effect throughout the country and suspended all Cabinet proceedings.

According to officials in charge of security, some fighting is happening between members of the Iraqi military and the Peace Brigades, a group loyal to Sadr. Social media videos showed some combatants using heavy weapons, including rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs).

Since the beginning of the 2000s, Sadr, now 48 years old, has been a prominent player in Iraq's public and political life. After the invasion that led to the overthrow of former leader Saddam Hussein, His Mehdi Army became one of the most formidable militias that battled against the US and allied Iraqi government forces. This conflict took place in the aftermath of the invasion. Later, he changed the group's name to the Peace Brigades, and to this day, it is still one of the largest militias that are now a member of the Iraqi armed forces.

Sadr, who was once an ally of Iran, has distanced himself from Iraq's Shia neighbor and recast himself as a patriot who wants to stop the US and Iranian influence over the internal affairs of Iraq.

According to analysts, Sadr's retirement announcement can be a response to the resignation of Ayatollah Kadhim al-Haeri – a prominent Shia leader in Iraq who also has a lot of control over a number of Al-Sadr followers.  

Al-Haeri announced that he will be stepping down due to health reasons and asked his followers to show their support for Iran’s Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. It was a problem for Al-Sadr who gained power from Al-Haeri's support and this announcement meant the momentary end of his clerical ambitions.
