Galaxy Cluster SMACS 0723 – Webb's First Deep Field

Galaxy Cluster SMACS 0723 – Webb's First Deep Field

On July 11, 2022, NASA Administrator Bill Nelson and Vice President Joe Biden of the United States presented the first images collected by the James Webb Space Telescope's Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam). These images include nebulae, galactic clusters, and a giant, never-before-seen exoplanet.

Galaxy Cluster SMACS 0723 – Webb's First Deep Field

This image, given the designation Webb's First Deep Field, displays thousands of galaxies that are part of the SMACS 0723 galaxy cluster, which is located around 4.6 billion light-years from Earth. Also, a significant number of other galaxies are located both in front of and behind the cluster. However, the region depicted in the photograph is only a tiny part of the entirety of the sky in the Southern Hemisphere. James Webb Space Telescope is the successor to the Hubble Space Telescope, responsible for obtaining photos at several wavelengths. James Webb collected photographs with significantly more depth than those produced by Hubble. The combined image can be seen below.

In addition to capturing these photos, two of Webb's equipment also collected spectra - data that reveals objects' physical and chemical features, which will allow experts in this field to find a great deal more information about distant galaxies. Webb's Near Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) micro shutter array observed 48 galaxies simultaneously, using new technology for the first time in space, and returned a comprehensive set of information on each. The results revealed that light from one galaxy traveled for 13,1 billion years before being recorded by Webb's mirrors. In addition, NIRSpec data highlight how detailed Webb observations will make galaxy spectra. Finally, Webb's Near-Infrared Imager and Slitless Spectrograph (NIRISS) utilized Wide-Field Slitless Spectroscopy to simultaneously acquire spectra of all objects within the whole field of vision. It demonstrates that one of the galaxies is a mirror reflection of itself.

Background

Since January 24, the telescope has been traveling in the same orbit around the L2 Lagrange point, which is approximately 1,500,000 kilometers (932,057 miles) from Earth and on the other side of the planet from the Sun. The telescope was launched from French Guinea, in the latter part of December 2021. The journey began after years of delays and multiple expense overruns. Its planned service life is between five and ten years, and during that time, it will investigate the most distant galaxies, which are also the ones that formed the earliest after the Big Bang.

During its journey, which Sky & Telescope referred to as "30 days of terror," the telescope was able to unfold its 21-foot-wide (6-meter) mirror successfully, deploy its sun shield, and cool down to temperatures lower than 50 degrees Kelvin as it made its way to the L2 Lagrange point.

L2 is a secure location for spacecraft where the gravitational pull of the Sun and the Earth is balanced. Entire scientific operations will involve thirteen teams of scientists. The primary mission is to find the most distant and earliest galaxies formed after the Big Bang to help study the Universe's origins. The nominal mission time is five years, with a goal of ten. Its orbit location is very different from the Hubble Space Telescope, which orbits much closer to Earth. James Webb's instruments face away from the Sun, giving greater clarity to the images it will obtain compared to Hubble.
