Christmas Flights Canceled Across the US

United and Delta blamed some of the cancellations on rising numbers of Covid infections.

In the US, with a surge in COVID-19 cases, all the three major airlines - United, Delta, and other U.S. airlines - have canceled more than 950 flights for Christmas Day, after canceling over 600 Christmas Eve flights the day before. The total number of flight cancelations now hovers around 1700 (+/-). 


The cancellations came as the Transportation Safety Administration (TSA) said the number of people traveling for the holiday is returning to pre-pandemic levels. It screened 2.19 million people at airports across the country on Thursday, the highest figure since the uptick in holiday travel started a week ago.


According to FlightAware; 


  1. Delta canceled more than 160 flights, or 8% of its Friday schedule, citing bad weather in the Salt Lake City and Seattle area, two of its hubs, and the impact of the fast-spreading omicron variant. Delta canceled more than 170 Saturday flights while United canceled more than 130.
  2. United canceled 201 flights on Friday, representing 10% of its total schedule, and 238 flights on Saturday, representing 12% of its schedule.
  3. JetBlue canceled 80 flights, or about 7% of its overall schedule, on the day before Christmas.
  4. The global tally of dropped flights exceeded 5,400 trips for Friday through Sunday.
  5. China Eastern has canceled 474 flights or 22% of its operation. Similarly, Air China canceled about 190 flights or 15% of its schedule.

According to the American Automobile Association (AAA), due to flight cancelations, the roadways to be even more congested this holiday season as millions of people are expected to travel to their Christmas destinations by car this year.


On the other hand, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention urges those planning to travel to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. People are also advised to avoid crowded and poorly ventilated spaces and to wear a well-fitting face mask when in public indoor settings. 


The CDC has also warned of spiking COVID-19 cases as the fast-spreading Omicron variant infects many throughout the nation. Omicron has become the dominant strain of the virus in the U.S. and health officials are urging people to get fully vaccinated and boosted.
