On the morning of January 26, 2020, the NBA Basketball icon and former Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant and his 13-year old daughter Gianna were reportedly killed in a helicopter crash.

During an afternoon press conference, Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva announced that a total of nine people were on Bryant's private Sikorsky S-76B helicopter which crashed in foggy conditions and then caught fire on a hillside in the Calabasas area around 30 miles (48 kilometers) northwest of Los Angeles.

In the same press conference, he criticized TMZ (a tabloid news website) for reporting the story before the local law enforcement had the opportunity for the coroner's office to confirm the identity of occupants and officially inform families. He stated, "It would be extremely disrespectful to understand that your loved one had perished and you learn [that] through TMZ."

According to Sikorsky (a subsidiary of Lockheed Martin), more than 178 customers operate S-76 helicopters in a corporate or VIP role,  adding that 10 countries “rely on the S-76 for the Head of State mission.” The company’s website, though, notes that the helicopter has “more than 7.4 million hours of safe, successful flight.”
