The SAAB Kockums Blekinge-class Submarine, commonly known as the A26 type, is the next generation of submarines designed by Kockums for the Swedish Navy. The project, which was planned at the beginning of the 1990s and given the name "U-båt 2000," was supposed to be completed by the end of the 1990s or the 2000s. However, with the end of the Cold War, the Soviet Union no longer posed a naval danger, and the new class of submarines was "deemed unnecessary." Finally, it was announced in March 2015 that the Swedish government restarted the project and had formally placed an order for two A26 submarines at a total cost of SEK 8.2 bn (roughly $945 Million as of March 18, 2015).

THE VARIANTS BASED ON MODULAR CONSTRUCTION

The A26 is being designed and constructed in four major sections with equipment installed on resiliently mounted platforms, achieving e.g.

‒ Flexible design (adaptations as per customer requirements)
‒ Distributed construction
‒ Verification during the early phases
‒ Future upgrades

A26 Pelagic

The new Pelagic variant is a smaller version of the A26 designed for the Swedish Navy. A26 Pelagic measures less than 50 meters in length with a surfaced displacement of about 1,000 tons. Its range is 4,000 nautical miles at 10 knots, and its endurance at patrol speed is over 20 days. Its standard crew complement is 17 to 25 sailors.
  • Length - 50m<
  • Surface Displacement - 1,000 tonnes
  • AIP endurance at patrol speed - >20 days
  • Range - >4000NM / 10 kn
  • Standard crew complement - 17-25
  • Operational environment - Tropical & Arctic
  • Propulsion - SAAB Kockums Stirling AIP and Diesel-electric
  • Weapon system - Sea/air/land upon request

A26 Oceanic

The Oceanic variant is the "baseline" A26 designed for the Swedish Navy. A26 Oceanic measures 65 meters in length with a surfaced displacement of 2,000 tons. Its range is over 6,500 nautical miles at 10 knots, and its endurance at patrol speed is over a month (30 days) thanks to the AIP module. Its standard crew complement is 17 to 35 sailors.

A26 Oceanic (Extended Range)

The new Oceanic (Extended Range) variant is a more oversized/stretched version of the A26. It has a length of over 80 meters and a surfaced displacement of over 3,000 tons. Its range is over 10,000 nautical miles at 10 knots, and its endurance at patrol speed is over 50 days, thanks to the AIP module. Its standard crew complement is 20 to 50 sailors.

Extended versions come with an array of customization for international clients, which include the following;

‒ Longer range and endurance (more fuel and supplies)
‒ Larger crew (more cabins, messes, and sanitary space)
‒ Longer submerged endurance (more LOX)
‒ Higher AIP speed (more AIP modules)
‒ Vertical launch

PROPULSION SYSTEM

A26 is powered by a combination of encapsulated Kockums Stirling Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) and diesel engine modules, flexible hoses, and compensators. It is loaded with GHOST® (Genuine HOlistic STealth) technology, making the submarine quiet without creating any thermal (IR) signature. The auxiliary Kockums Stirling AIP engine in A26 burns a mixture of gasified pure industrial liquid oxygen (LOX) and diesel fuel to drive 75-kilowatt electrical generators for either propulsion or charging batteries. The same low-sulfur diesel is used for both the diesel and Stirling engines.

CURRENT STATUS

The Royal Swedish Navy (Svenska Marinen) has invested $840 million in the Blekinge-class program to replace the Södermanland-class diesel-electric submarines of the Cold War era. Currently, two submarines are under construction;
  • HSwMS Blekinge (A26 Oceanic); laid down June 30, 2022 - Expected delivery; 2027.
  • HSwMS Skåne (A26 Oceanic); yet to lay down - Expected delivery; 2027.

FAILED FOREIGN SALE

India

A26 was one of the contenders for Project 75 (India), i.e., P75I, a long pending conventional submarine program for the Indian Navy, valuing $10.9 billion. But, SAAB pulled out of the race, citing ‘unbalance’ in strategic partnership policy. It was supposed to be a follow-on for Project 75 Kalvari-class submarines. Under this project P75I, the Indian Navy intends to acquire 6 diesel-electric submarines, which will also feature advanced AIP systems to enable them to stay submerged for a longer duration and substantially increase their operational range across Indian Ocean Region (IOR) with littoral capabilities.

PROSPECTIVE FOREIGN SALE

The Netherlands

As of October 2021, Saab has joined forces with Damen Shipyards to offer a derivative of its A26 submarine to Royal Netherlands Navy (Koninklijke Marine).

Poland

In 2016, Saab signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa (PGZ), the biggest defense company in Poland, to work on the Polish naval programs, including the construction of submarines. Later the company offered A26 within the framework of the Polish Navy's (Marynarka Wojenna) ‘Orka’ program.  However, there are no updates available at this time.
