Doha, Qatar – April 30th: The ORYX GTL Student Awards for the Advancement of Post Graduate Education, now in their sixth year, have celebrated some 30 envoys since 2014 who have been recognized for their commitment to higher education and advancing Qatar’s aspiration to build a knowledge economy.

The 2019 class of student award winners, three in the Ph.D. category and 2 in the Master's classification, hail from the country’s top engineering universities – Qatar University, Texas A&M University at Qatar and the Hamad Bin Khalifa University. They join a distinguished group of award alumni who have gone on to be leading academics and industry researchers across Qatar.  

“The advancement of a knowledge economy is a central feature of developed and developing countries alike,” said Mohamed Al Enazi, Chief Administration Officer at ORYX GTL. “Innovation, along with rising investment in such areas as research and development, has become ever more important as a driver of growth,” said the senior executive at ORYX GTL, that has backed Qatar’s vision of creating a "Knowledge-based economy" over the last decade. 

The ORYX GTL Student Awards for the Advancement of Post-Graduate Education in Qatar celebrates outstanding young individuals destined to be the country’s future industry and academic leaders. This pioneering Award promotes role models and is focused on celebrating the importance of building post-graduate education capacity in Qatar, which hosts more tier-one U.S. universities than any other country in the Middle East and North Africa.

The 2019 ORYX GTL Student Award winners included Amro Mamoon Osman Mohamed and Manar Oqbi, both completing an MSc. in Chemical Engineering at Texas A&M University at Qatar. Ahmed Alnouss was a prize winner this year in the Ph.D. category, recognized for his work in Sustainable Energy at HBKU, alongside Mohamed Sufiyan Challiwala, Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, TAMUQ, and Yousuf Abdullah Rebeeh, Ph.D. Engineering Management, Qatar University.

Each year a distinguished group of celebrated global scholars is invited onto the International Academic Review Committee for the ORYX GTL Student Awards to judge all the nominees. This year’s panel of experts was led by Mr. Al Enazi and also included César O. Malavé, Dean & COO, TAMUQ, Marwan Khraisheh, Senior Research Director, QEERI – HBKU, Dr Ayman Bassil, Manager of Research Training and Outreach, Qatar National Research Fund, and Dr. Mohammed Al Safran, office of the Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies, Qatar University.
