On January 19, 2019, India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the state-of-the-art Larsen and Toubro (L&T) Defence's Armoured Systems Complex in Hazira, Gujarat. The facility established to supply 90 units (out of 100) of K9 VAJRA-T 155 mm/52 calibre tracked self-propelled gun systems to the Indian Army for ₹4,366 crores (US$ 600.4 million) deal signed under the Indian Government's "Make in India" initiative in the year 2016. It is spread 40 acres within L&T's 755-acre Hazira Manufacturing Complex.

India's Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Minister of Defence Acquisition of the Republic of Korea Wang Jung Hong, and L&T Group Chairman A M Naik were also present on the occasion.

Earlier in November 2018, the howitzer was formally inducted into Army along with American  M777 A2 155 mm/39-calibre Towed Lightweight Howitzer. The initial 10 units were brought from South Korea in "semi knocked down (SKD)" state and assembled by India's Larsen & Toubro. The rest of the 90 units will be produced locally by the company at it's Strategic Systems Complex in Talegaon near Pune and at newly inaugurated Armoured Systems Complex in Hazira, Gujarat.

According to the latest media reports, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Sunday (January 20) said the Army would get a fleet of 10 more Howitzers in the next one month.

"I congratulate the entire team of Larsen & Toubro for building the state-of-the-art K-9 Vajra Self Propelled Howitzer. This is a significant contribution towards India's defense sector and protecting the country," Modi tweeted. He further added, "Boosting 'Make in India' in the defense sector is our endeavor. I am glad that the private sector too is supporting this pursuit and making a valuable contribution".

K9 VAJRA-T is a derivative of the South Korean K9 Thunder, developed by Samsung Techwin for the Republic of Korea Armed Forces and now manufactured by Hanwha Land Systems under the new entity "Hanwha Techwin".
