On November 16, 2018, The Republic of Korea Navy's (RoKN's) launched its first largest training ship ROKS Hansando (ATH 81). ATH is the acronym of Auxiliary Training Ship Helo.

The ship was constructed by Hyundai Heavy Industries' (HHI's) at its Ulsan Shipyard under Training Ship Experimental (ATX) program. The value of the contract was about ₩260 billion (US$ 23 million) at the time of awarding in June 2016.

RoKN plans to put Hansando in operation in early 2021 mainly for the training of cadets (in their third year of training). The ship is named after a southern islet, around which Admiral Yi Sun-sin staged a major battle against a Japanese fleet in 1592.

The ship weights 4,500-ton and its 142-meter-long which can sail more than 7,000 n miles (13,000 km) at the cruising speed of 18kts (33km/h). The maximum speed is 24kts. It's equipped with 76-mm and 40-mm guns and anti-missile decoy system and is able to accommodate more than 400 people, installed with huge lecture rooms, dispensary, surgery rooms, and sickbeds.

The ship is fitted with two naval guns systems: A Hyundai WIA 76mm Gun Mount and a 40mm secondary gun on top of the helicopter hangar.

Besides that, the stern doors with the ramps will allow for the easy launch and recovery of Rigid-hulled inflatable boats (RHIBs). There is also a deck and hangar to accommodate a medium-size helicopter.
