IAR Gandhinagar Organizes National Symposium on Cancer Biology and Research

The Symposium was Sponsored by Department of Science and Technology, Government of Gujarat and Gujarat State Biotechnology Mission (GSBTM).

Institute of Advanced Research (IAR), Gandhinagar has organized "National Symposium on Basic & Translational Research in Cancer Biology, Discover New Challenges" on September 11-12, 2019 Sponsored by Department of Science and Technology, Government of Gujarat and Gujarat State Biotechnology Mission (GSBTM). This symposium is conceptualized under the leadership of Prof B. Rao, President, IAR Gandhinagar, and symposium convener Dr. Chandramani Pathak. 

Cancer is a fatal disease and is the second leading cause of death worldwide. Not only that but, Cancer is also a socio-economic burden in society. Extensive efforts in the past have been on cancer research and clinical development, but they are still challenging and results are not praiseworthy and effective. Cancer is an undiagnosed, asymmetric disease at an early stage and is difficult to predict and diagnose due to poor biomarkers. Cancer has the lowest success rates and high mortality rates in all diseases. That is why it is so important to understand the biology of cancer and its essential cellular mechanism.

Dr. C. Pathak who is the convener, NSBTRCB, points out that “The Symposium" served the purpose of bringing together scientists, clinicians and students to share their knowledge and promote basic, translational and clinical research in cancer biology and it helps to conduct progressive research to battle with cancer.

More than 90 numbers of Undergraduates, postgraduates, doctoral students and well-known scientists under this symposium all over the country and from outside the country also participated.

The chief guest of this symposium was Dr. Subhash Soni from GSBTM, shared his views on intellectual lifestyle for preventing diseases. Dr. Yatin Vyas talked about his early discovery of Kilskott Alrish Syndrome (KlAS). He perfectly demonstrated how the KlASP in Alrish Syndrome (KlAS) may later be susceptible to leukemia and lymphoma. He also highlighted the fact that it is involved in the R loop-mediated DNA damage and repair. This KlASP can be an important KlAS disease biomarker and the T-cell R loop correlates with a clinical score in a subset of KlAS patients. Dr. Abhijit De ACTREC Mumbai shared his research on clinical translation of novel nanotherapeutics. Their group design gold nanosphere by coating liposomes with gold particles. They showed that gold nanoparticles combine with laser inhibits tumor growth even a month after the treatment. 

Dr. Rakesh Rawal from Gujarat University talked on liquid biopsy-based cancer diagnosis. Dr. Manas Santra, NCCS Pune, talked about tumor suppressor FBXO31 function as a gatekeeper to prevent oncogenes induced malignant transformation. Dr. Alok Bharti, Delhi University, talked about the role of exosomes in carcinogenic signaling in Cervical cancer.

At the end of the program, Prof. Rao, President of the Institute of Advanced Research said that, “I am feeling glad that, IAR has taken an initiative to gathered Scientists, Students and Researchers across India on the soil of Gujarat State. Meaningful and enriching efforts have been taken for undergraduate and postgraduate students who were given the valuable opportunity to interact with scientists together and discuss their research, challenges and the latest technology. By this way, one get updated what is ongoing at world level in areas of research, clinical development, challenges, new inventions and technologies usage in science sector.”
