Japan-China Opinion Poll 2023 Highlights Concerns About Nuclear War

On October 10, the Genron NPO, a non-profit, independent think tank based in Japan, published the outcomes of its 19th collaborative public opinion poll conducted in cooperation between Japan and China. The survey, conducted in light of the 45th anniversary of the Treaty of Peace and Friendship between Japan and the People's Republic of China, aimed to gauge the sentiments of citizens in both nations regarding matters of peace and stability. What sets this poll apart is its inclusion of questions about the destabilizing global nuclear weapon landscape, the ongoing war in Ukraine, and the challenges involved in achieving peace. Remarkably, it marks the first instance of a survey that delves into Chinese respondents' viewpoints on contemporary issues related to nuclear weaponry in Asia and beyond.
The Japan-China Joint Public Opinion Survey 2023 is a cooperative initiative between the Genron NPO and the China International Communications Group from late August to mid-September of 2023. This annual poll has been an ongoing effort since 2005, a time when Japan-China relations were particularly strained. This year's survey marks the 19th iteration, designed to provide a continuous gauge of mutual understanding and perceptions held by the Japanese and Chinese public toward each other and the evolving dynamics between the two nations over time.
In Japan, the survey employed the placement method, involving the hand-delivery and collection of questionnaires between September 2 and September 12. The survey targeted men and women aged 18 and above, accumulating a total of 1,000 valid responses. The respondents were comprised of 48.2% males and 51.2% females. Their age distribution spanned 2.6% under 20, 11.7% between 20 and 29, 13.3% between 30 and 39, 17.5% between 40 and 49, 15.9% between 50 and 59, and 39.0% over 60. Educationally, respondents consisted of 5.1% with a junior high school diploma or lower, 46.2% with a high school diploma, 21.5% with a junior or technical college diploma, 23.9% with a bachelor's degree, and 1.5% with a master's degree or higher.
On the other hand, in China, the survey was conducted through individual interviews in 10 major cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Shenyang, Wuhan, Nanjing, Xi'an, Qingdao, and Zhengzhou. The data collection took place from August 18 to September 1, targeting men and women aged 18 and above. This part of the survey yielded 1,506 valid responses, featuring 48.8% male and 51.2% female participants. The age distribution in this segment included 0.5% under the age of 20, 18.5% between 20 and 29, 27.0% between 30 and 39, 22.4% between 40 and 49, 11.7% between 50 and 59, and 19.9% aged 60 and above. Educationally, the Chinese respondents were categorized as 14.6% with a junior high school diploma or lower, 35.9% with a high school or technical high school diploma, 41.9% with a bachelor's degree, 2.0% with a double degree, and 5.5% with a master's degree or higher.
It's important to note that percentages may not sum up to exactly 100% in certain cases, as the figures provided are rounded to one decimal place, and non-responses have been excluded. These findings have added a significant layer of understanding to the prevailing sentiments in both Japan and China, shedding light on concerns regarding the current global nuclear landscape and other pressing international matters.
