In a surprising turn of events, Anthony Rota, the Speaker of Canada's Parliament, has resigned from his position amidst mounting pressure following his controversial recognition of a man with ties to a Nazi World War II unit during a special parliamentary session last week. This decision comes as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited the House of Commons.
Addressing Canadian lawmakers in Ottawa, Speaker Anthony Rota expressed his resignation "with a heavy heart," acknowledging the significance of the institution he represented. He had invited Yaroslav Hunka to the special session, where he publicly hailed the 98-year-old as a "Ukrainian hero." However, it was later revealed that Hunka had served in the 14th Waffen Grenadier Division of the Nazi's SS military unit, a fact brought to light by the Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center, a Jewish community group.
During the session, Hunka received standing ovations from members of the House of Commons, including President Zelenskyy and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who were present. In light of the mounting criticism and calls for his resignation from advocacy groups, Canadian lawmakers, and members of his own Liberal Party, Speaker Rota admitted his error, recognizing the pain it had caused to individuals, communities, and survivors of Nazi atrocities, both in Canada and around the world. His resignation is set to take effect on Wednesday at the end of the day.
Members of all major Canadian political parties had called for Rota's resignation, with Foreign Minister Melanie Joly deeming the incident "an embarrassment to the House and to Canadians." The Russian government expressed outrage over Hunka's recognition in Canada, with Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov describing it as "outrageous" and asserting that Western countries, including Canada, had failed to educate younger generations about the events of World War II and the threat of fascism.
Despite Speaker Rota's prompt apology and acknowledgment of his mistake, some prominent figures, including Roland Paris, the director of the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs at the University of Ottawa, insisted that his resignation was necessary, given the gravity of the situation. Prime Minister Trudeau, who characterized the events as "deeply embarrassing" for Canada, also faced questions from opposition Conservative Party lawmakers regarding his knowledge of Hunka's background and the vetting process.
