Reports: Water Shortage Crisis Looms Over Mexico City

"Day Zero" Scenario

Enrique Aso, a contributor to CBS News, sheds light on the dire circumstances faced by the city's residents. He emphasizes the pervasive nature of the water shortage, citing instances where people resort to unconventional methods to procure water for their daily needs. The situation, he notes, marks a significant departure from the water abundance that the city has enjoyed for the better part of a decade.
While droughts are uncommon globally, Mexico City's predicament has been exacerbated by systemic issues such as poor water management and infrastructure inadequacies. Aso points to a combination of factors contributing to the crisis, including rampant underground leaks that account for a significant portion of water wastage, estimated to be as high as 40%. Moreover, residential leaks further compound the problem, exacerbating the strain on a fragile water supply system. Darío Solano-Rojas, an associate professor specializing in earth science engineering at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, points out that the concept of "Day Sero" is already a reality for many individuals who have already exhausted their water resources, reflecting a long-standing issue in the region.
The historical context of Mexico City reveals a deeply rooted connection with water, tracing back to its origins. Situated on the remains of a drained high-altitude lake bed since the 16th century Spanish conquest, the city relies heavily on intricate systems to manage its water supply, notably the Cutzamala System. This system encompasses a network of canals, dams, and reservoirs, crucial for sustaining the city's water needs.
Currently, Mexico City draws approximately 70% of its water from underground aquifers, with the remaining 30% supplied by the Cutzamala System to both the metropolitan area and the adjacent Toluca Valley. However, the extensive use of underground aquifers, compounded by urban expansion, has led to their depletion and consequent land subsidence, a phenomenon documented in a 2021 study co-authored by Solano-Rojas. The research highlights that since 1950, the city has experienced a significant sinking rate of approximately 20 inches annually due to groundwater extraction.
