Agaléga: India and Mauritius Enhance Surveillance Infrastructure for Security in the Indian Ocean Region

 India and Mauritius have taken a significant step towards enhancing security measures in the Indian Ocean region by jointly inaugurating new island facilities dedicated to surveillance. The new facilities will enable the two countries to closely monitor the region's strategic maritime assets and better coordinate their responses to untoward incidents. The inauguration marks a historic milestone in the bilateral relations between India and Mauritius, highlighting their unwavering commitment to advancing cooperation in the crucial area of maritime security.
The newly constructed airstrip and jetty facilities, strategically positioned across various islands, will serve as key surveillance hubs equipped with advanced technology to monitor maritime activities, including vessel movements and potential security threats. Located approximately 1,100 kilometers north of Mauritius's capital, Port Louis, 645 kilometers south of Mahé, capital of Seychelles and 2,500 kilometers southwest of Malé, the capital of the Maldives, Agaléga's strategic positioning has drawn attention due to its proximity to crucial maritime routes and its potential significance in regional security dynamics. This collaborative effort reflects the shared concerns of India and Mauritius regarding the need to safeguard their maritime interests and ensure the safety of shipping lanes in the region.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, officials from both countries emphasized the significance of the collaboration in bolstering maritime security efforts. They highlighted the role of technology and information-sharing mechanisms in enhancing situational awareness and response capabilities. India's Minister of External Affairs reiterated the country's commitment to deepening ties with Mauritius and other Indian Ocean-rim countries to promote peace, stability, and prosperity in the region. He emphasized the importance of collective action and cooperation in addressing common security threats and challenges. Similarly, Mauritian authorities expressed gratitude for India's support and cooperation in strengthening their maritime capabilities. They emphasized the mutual benefits of the collaboration, including the exchange of expertise, training opportunities, and joint exercises to enhance operational readiness.
The inauguration of these surveillance facilities reflects a broader trend of maritime cooperation among Indian Ocean littoral states. As maritime security assumes greater significance in the geopolitical landscape, countries in the region are increasingly recognizing the imperative of collaborative efforts to address shared security concerns. The strategic location of Mauritius, situated at the crossroads of major sea routes, makes it a vital partner for India in its maritime security endeavors. The island nation's proximity to critical maritime chokepoints underscores its strategic importance in safeguarding sea lanes and ensuring the free flow of commerce.

Mauritius regards India as its foremost partner for defense cooperation, encompassing the procurement of diverse platforms and equipment, capacity building, joint patrols, and hydrological services. Indian military and intelligence personnel are significantly involved in Mauritius, with an Indian Navy officer leading the Mauritian National Coast Guard, a seasoned Indian intelligence officer serving as Mauritius' National Security Advisor, an Indian Air Force officer in charge of the Police Helicopter Squadron, and an Indian Naval Officer overseeing the Mauritius Hydrography Services. As per the brief published by the High Commission of India at Port Louis, presently, around 20 officers from the Indian Defence Forces are serving with the Government of Mauritius (GoM). India has provided substantial assistance to Mauritius, furnishing the majority of helicopters, ships, aircraft, and Fast Interceptor boats currently in operation.
Furthermore, India aided in establishing a Coastal Surveillance Radar System, which is currently undergoing upgrades with support from Japan. In February 2021, India extended a Line of Credit (LoC) valued at US$ 100 million to Mauritius for defense procurement. Leveraging this credit, GoM has already acquired a Passenger Variant of Dornier aircraft and an Advanced Light Helicopter, Dhruv. The remaining funds are allocated for procuring an Offshore Patrol Vessel, presently under acquisition.
Moreover, the partnership between India and Mauritius is anticipated to bolster regional stability and act as a deterrent against potential threats such as piracy, illegal fishing, and transnational crime. By establishing a robust surveillance infrastructure, both nations aim to enhance their awareness of maritime activities and bolster their capacity to promptly address security challenges.
