Pakistan's General Election Yields Surprising Outcome with Imran Khan-Backed Independents Leading

The recently concluded general election in Pakistan has produced unexpected results, with independent candidates supported by imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party emerging as frontrunners. According to final tallies, independents secured victory in 101 seats of the National Assembly, with BBC analysis revealing that 93 of these victories were attributed to PTI-backed candidates. This places them ahead of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PMLN), led by former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, which secured 75 seats. However, the formation of the next government remains uncertain as both parties vie for power.

As the political landscape unfolds, independent candidates who failed to secure seats have inundated courts with allegations of vote rigging. The PTI, sidelined from contesting in the election, and the PMLN both assert their intentions to lead the government. The outcome surprised many observers who anticipated a victory for Sharif's party, widely perceived to have the support of the influential military, especially given Khan's incarceration on various charges, including corruption and an alleged illegal marriage, and his party's exclusion from the ballot.

To form a government, a candidate must demonstrate a coalition with a simple majority of 169 seats in the National Assembly. The PMLN has initiated discussions with Bilawal Bhutto Zardari's Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) to pursue this majority, signaling a potential alliance to achieve political stability. The two parties previously united to depose Khan's administration in 2022 and governed until August. Additionally, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) has made a noteworthy comeback in the polls, securing 17 seats, potentially influencing coalition dynamics.

Out of the National Assembly's 366 seats, 266 are determined by direct voting, while the remaining 70 are reserved for women (60 seats) and non-Muslims (10 seats), allocated based on each party's strength in the assembly. Independent candidates, however, are ineligible for reserved seats. Allegations of election fraud have prompted the PTI and other parties to call for protests against the results. Despite police efforts to quell demonstrations, protesters gathered near the electoral commission building in Rawalpindi, expressing concerns over alleged irregularities.

The imposition of Section 144, a colonial-era law limiting public gatherings, underscores the tension surrounding the election aftermath. While police have justified restrictions as necessary for maintaining order, political parties, particularly the PTI, have accused electoral officers of tampering with results. Sharif, perceived as the military's preferred candidate, has appealed to rival parties for cooperation in establishing a unity government. However, analysts caution that such collaborations could lead to a fragile and volatile coalition.

Political negotiations are currently ongoing in Pakistan between opposing parties. However, there are concerns that this could lead to a prolonged period of political instability. Dr. Farzana Shaikh of the Chatham House think tank has warned against the possibility of a government led by Khan's allies, instead projecting a scenario of a fragile coalition between Sharif and the PPP. The situation remains uncertain, and some PTI-supported candidates have filed legal challenges, alleging manipulation of election results.

While Pakistani authorities deny any irregularities, the PMLN has assembled a legal team to address accusations of rigging. The unfolding post-election developments underscore the complexity of Pakistan's political landscape as parties maneuver to assert influence and secure power after a closely contested election.
