France Orders 109 CAESAR Mk II Self-Propelled Howitzers

France has recently made a significant move in bolstering its military capabilities by procuring 109 CAESAR 6×6 Mk II self-propelled howitzers (SPHs). The contract, awarded by the Direction Générale de l'Armement (DGA), the French defense procurement agency, to Nexter, was announced on February 2, according to a press release from KNDS (KMW+Nexter Defense Systems).

The CAESAR Mk II SPHs represent a new generation of artillery systems and are set to replace the aging AuF1 tracked SPHs and the existing CAESAR Mk Is currently in service with the French Army since 2008. The Mk II variant has been developing since its launch in December 2021.

Procuring these SPHs aligns with France's military funding program, Loi de Programmation Militaire 2024–2030. Under this program, the French government aims to modernize its armed forces and enhance its defense capabilities. The contract also includes provisions for supporting the CAESAR Mk II during its initial years in service.

Notably, all 109 CAESAR Mk IIs will be new builds, with deliveries slated to commence in 2026. Nexter has also signed a framework agreement with the DGA, enabling France to provide CAESARs and support services to partner countries.

The delivery timeline outlined by Nexter indicates that all 109 CAESAR Mk IIs will be integrated into the French Army's artillery regiments by 2031. This deployment is expected to significantly enhance the firepower and operational effectiveness of the French artillery units.

Design and other Technical Specifications

The Camion Équipé d'un Système d'Artillerie or CAESAR is a French 155 mm, 52-caliber self-propelled howitzer, developed by the French defense company Nexter Systems. It is an advanced piece of military equipment that boasts a range of features designed to meet the evolving needs of artillery forces worldwide.

At the heart of the CAESAR Mk IIs lies its multi-purpose design, emphasizing mobility, ease of implementation, sustained firing capability, and survivability. Built to the JB MoU 155mm/52 caliber standard, it ensures full interoperability with NATO 39 and 52 caliber ammunition, enhancing its operational flexibility across various conflict scenarios and theaters of operation. Mounted on a 6x6 truck chassis, the CAESAR Mk IIs offers tactical mobility and maneuverability, making it adaptable to support motorized, mechanized, or armored units, including rapid deployment forces.

The firepower of the CAESAR Mk IIs is bolstered by its operational speed, extended range, and heightened accuracy. With a rate of fire of six rounds per minute and a range of up to 42 kilometers with Extended Range Full Bore (ERFB) ammunition, it ensures potent and precise firepower across various mission requirements. Plus, it can disengage from its firing position in less than two minutes, and it minimizes exposure to counter-battery fire, ensuring mission success. The overall system's versatility extends to various combat missions, including direct support fire, in-depth action fire, counter-battery fire, and coastal defense.

The CAESAR Mk IIs feature a new armor cabin, providing ballistic protection at levels 2 and 3A/2B against mine aggressions. This enhanced protection, coupled with its standard Renault Sherpa 5 truck chassis, reinforces its resilience in diverse operational environments.

Noteworthy is the CAESAR Mk IIs's proven track record, demonstrated during a recent French Army demonstration where a crew successfully fired eight munitions in less than one minute. This accomplishment underscores the system's efficiency and effectiveness in real-world scenarios. Its predecessor, Mk I, is currently deployed in Ukraine - 18 from French military stock and 6 brand new. Besides that, they have been sold to several international customers, including France, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, and Thailand.  



EDITORIAL NOTE: France's acquisition order of these SPHs is a significant step in keeping their defense force modern and effective. By successfully implementing this procurement contract, France will not only strengthen its military capabilities but will also contribute to bolstering NATO's collective defense posture. Moreover, it will further cement its position as a critical player in European defense cooperation initiatives. With their acquisition of CAESAR Mk IIs, France is taking a significant step towards ensuring that they have the necessary tools to tackle any security challenges that may arise in the future.
