Former Israeli Prime Minister Olmert Alleges Netanyahu's Role in Hamas Build-up, Advocates for Change

In a recent interview with NDTV, former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert leveled serious allegations against the current Israeli Premier, Benjamin Netanyahu. Olmert, who led Israel from 2006 to 2009, firmly placed the blame on Netanyahu for the build-up of Hamas capabilities in the Gaza Strip following the devastating Hamas attack on October 7, which resulted in the tragic loss of more than 1,300 Israeli lives, including children, unarmed civilians, and soldiers.

According to Olmert, the heart of the issue lies in what he described as a questionable deal Netanyahu made with Hamas. This agreement, Olmert claims, led to the release of "1,000 Hamas prisoners in exchange for just one Israeli soldier." The former Prime Minister expressed deep concerns, asserting that this exchange had dire consequences, empowering Hamas and compromising Israel's security.

Olmert's statements didn't stop there; he also accused Netanyahu of pursuing policies that marginalized moderate Palestinians, whom he believed should have been engaged in negotiations. This, Olmert argued, inadvertently facilitated the rise of Hamas as it was viewed as a non-negotiating party. By avoiding concessions to moderate Palestinians, Netanyahu effectively allowed Hamas to flourish.

The former Israeli Prime Minister's claims come at a crucial time when tensions run high in the region. Recent events, such as the Gaza hospital blast that killed 500, have only exacerbated the conflict. US President Joe Biden expressed his outrage in response to this incident, emphasizing Israel's right to defend itself.

Olmert shared his skepticism regarding the possibility of a diplomatic resolution with Hamas, referencing President Biden's stance. He stated, "I don't think a diplomatic compromise is aimed at Hamas," highlighting the complex nature of the situation.


Despite the allegations and criticisms, Olmert underscored the importance of minimizing civilian casualties in the ongoing conflict. He emphasized, "This is not a competition of who kills more. We are not interested in killing civilians." Olmert's comments reflected Israel's commitment to minimizing collateral damage during its military operations.

However, Olmert was evident in his stance on the presence of Hamas. He stressed that achieving peace would be impossible if Hamas remained a dominant force in the Gaza Strip. "We want peace, but there will be no peace if Hamas is there. We know innocent people have died, but Hamas is not letting them go," he said. The former Prime Minister emphasized that concerted efforts must be made to remove Hamas from its position as an essential step toward achieving peace.

Olmert's political journey is notable. He began his career with the ruling Likud party but later shifted his allegiance to Kadima, a centrist party formed by moderates led by former Prime Minister Ariel Sharon. After his hospitalization, Olmert took over the reins as Prime Minister when Sharon was declared unfit for office.

The allegations and observations made by Ehud Olmert carry significant weight in the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict. As the region grapples with the aftermath of the devastating Hamas attack and continues to navigate the complexities of the situation, the statements of former leaders like Olmert provide valuable insights and perspectives for those seeking a resolution to the ongoing crisis.
