BRICS Set to Expand Membership by Welcoming Six New Nations, Including Iran and Saudi Arabia

BRICS alliance, consisting of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, has declared the inclusion of six additional nations starting from January 1, 2024, as part of their efforts to reshape the global landscape, characterized by large and densely populated emerging economies.

During their summit in South Africa, Argentina, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and the UAE were announced as full-fledged members. Chinese President Xi Jinping, whose country holds significant influence within this coalition of non-Western states representing a quarter of the world's economy, described this expansion as a historic moment. He emphasized that this enlargement marks a fresh beginning for BRICS cooperation, injecting new energy into the collaborative mechanism and further fortifying their collective commitment to global peace and development.

Also, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his support with the following words; “India fully supports the expansion of the BRICS membership. And welcomes moving forward with a consensus on this. In 2016, during India’s chairmanship, we defined BRICS as Building Responsive, Inclusive, and Collective Solutions. After seven years, we can say that BRICS will be – Breaking barriers, Revitalising economies, Inspiring innovation, Creating opportunities, and Shaping the future. Together with all the BRICS partners, we will continue to contribute actively in making this new definition meaningful.”

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed celebrated what he referred to as "a great moment" for his nation. He expressed Ethiopia's readiness to collaborate with all parties to foster an inclusive and prosperous global order, as conveyed on X, formerly Twitter.

The discussion surrounding the expansion of the BRICS  alliance took center stage during its three-day summit in Johannesburg. It brought to light differing opinions within the group regarding the pace and criteria for admitting new members. However, the coalition, known for making decisions through consensus, reached an agreement on "the guiding principles, standards, criteria, and procedures for the BRICS expansion process," as South African President Cyril Ramaphosa stated.

Approximately two dozen countries from the global south, a term referring to non-Western nations, had formally applied to join this group. The summit boasted the presence of about 50 other heads of state and government, underscoring the appeal of the BRICS message, according to its leaders. However, the US officials downplayed the possibility of BRICS emerging as a geopolitical rival, characterizing the bloc as a diverse assembly of countries with friends and rivals.

The BRICS is a diverse mix of economies and democratic and authoritarian states, and this diversity is reflected in both the aspiring members and those already admitted to the club. Nevertheless, despite their differences, BRICS leaders share a common belief that the international system is heavily influenced by Western states and institutions, which they believe do not adequately serve the interests of developing nations.

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva pointed out that with the inclusion of six new members, the bloc would represent 46% of the world's population and an even larger portion of its economic output.

NOTE: The 15th BRICS summit highlighted divisions with the West regarding the Ukraine conflict and Russia's support from its BRICS partners during a period of global isolation. South Africa, China, and India did not condemn Russia's invasion, while Brazil opted not to join Western nations in supplying arms to Ukraine or imposing sanctions on Moscow.
