Muscat, Oman – October 18, 2016 – H.E. Salim Al Aufi, Undersecretary, Ministry of Oil & Gas, Oman and Steve Kelly, President & General Manager, Occidental of Oman presented the 4 esteemed winners of the Inaugural Occidental Oman Student Awards for the Advancement of Post-Graduate Education at a ceremony at The Gulf Intelligence Oman Energy Industry-Academia R&D Summit.  

H.E. Dr. Hilal Al Hinai, Secretary General of The Research Council & Dr. Rahma Ibrahim Al-Mahrooqi, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Post-Graduate Studies & Research, SQU were among the guests who attended the Occidental Oman Student Awards ceremony to recognize the country’s best post-graduate talent in the community of Masters and PhDs students. The Awards highlight the importance of continually enhancing post-graduate education to support Oman’s capacity in research and development (R&D) in the field of energy, which sits at the heart of the country’s economy. Oil and gas accounted for nearly 80% of government revenues in 2015.

The Winners of the Occidental Oman Student Awards 2016 for the Advancement of Post-Graduate Education:   
  • Lamya Adnan Al-Haj, Ph.D. in Structural & Molecular Biology, University College London
  • Omar Said Al-Abri, Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering.  Sultan Qaboos University  
  • Mahir Mansour Al-Wahaibi, Masters in Environmental Engineering and Projects Management, University of Leeds  
  • Mohammed Salim Al Shuaili, Masters in Mechanical Engineering, Sultan Qaboos University 
“Recognizing the achievements of Oman’s Masters and Ph.D. students will spark the imagination of a new generation of thought leaders. The winners of the 2016 Occidental Oman Student Awards for the Advancement of Post-Graduate Education will become positive role models to a new generation of young Omanis seeking careers in the energy sector, which will give some of the brightest minds in the country a head start in what is a highly competitive industry,” said H.E. Salim Al Aufi, Undersecretary, Ministry of Oil & Gas, Oman  

It is critical to support Oman’s In-Country Value (ICV) and Omanization, especially as there is a growing sense of urgency to bolster the country’s oil and gas production while also diversifying the economy. As with all energy producers worldwide, low oil prices have put pressure on Oman’s economy. More than ever, the talent and innovative spirit of the country’s brightest minds, which is well-illustrated by The Occidental Oman Student Awards for the Advancement of Post-Graduate Education, are vital to ensuring Oman’s economy flourishes.
