Muscat, Oman: September 7, 2016 (Gulf Intelligence) – In an initiative called Occidental Oman Student Awards for the Advancement of Post-Graduate Education, Occidental Oman and Gulf Intelligence have teamed up to award Omani and Oman-based postgraduates with outstanding achievements in the field of energy. Award nominations, submissions of which are now open, will be evaluated by a proficient Selection Committee that will announce 4 winners - 2 Masters and 2 PhD postgraduates. The primary aim  of the Awards is to , recognize outstanding individuals and future thought leaders who are instrumental to achieving the Sultanate’s goal to create an innovative research and development (R&D) ecosystem as per the National Vision 2020. 

The inaugural Occidental Oman Student Awards for the Advancement of Post-Graduate Education also aim to enhance the prestige and attitude toward research-focused education in particular Masters and PhD levels, both of which are considered as a major component to building the knowledge capacity required to build and develop an innovative R&D ecosystem. The Awards will create role models for future generations, and enable them to become ambassadors for the Advancement of Post-Graduate Education in Oman.

Oman's younger generation has significant potential and those who are passionately pursuing Masters and PhDs are not only enhancing their knowledge base, but benefiting Oman’s economy as a whole,” Steve Kelly President & General Manager of Occidental Oman said. “Education has always been at the heart of economic and social growth" he also added.   

Once nominations are received, the Selection Committee which consists of distinguished individuals from government, academia and industry will evaluate the nominees' profiles. The winners will be announced and presented with awards at The Gulf Intelligence Oman Energy Industry-Academia R&D Summit on the 18th of October in Muscat.   

Stakeholders and students from industry and academia are invited to nominate exemplary individuals, along with an explanation for their choice and details on how their research supports Oman’s future goals.

Criteria for Nominees for the PhD Award:  
  • Omani National, or Oman-based and Oman-educated for a period of 10 consecutive years.  
  • Near completion of PhD, or a recent PhD graduate in an energy-related field. 
  • Degree must have been completed within the past two years.  
  • Demonstrates potential to be a future thought leader in the energy industry in Oman.  
  • PhD dissertation should be relevant to Oman.  
  • Extra weight given to PHD studies that directly impact the advancement of local industry.  
  • Demonstrate the intention of working in Oman. 

Criteria for Nominees for the Masters Award:  
  • Omani National, or Oman-based and Oman-educated for a period of 10 consecutive years.  
  • Near completion of Masters, or a recent Masters graduate in an energy-related field. 
  • Degree must have been completed within the past two years.  
  • Demonstrates potential to be a future thought leader in the energy industry in Oman.  
  • Current, or planned involvement in energy-related research in Oman.  
  • Demonstrate the intention of working in Oman.  
  • Extra weight will be given to those with intent to pursue a PhD.  
  • Exemplary Undergraduate and Graduate grades.
