Woody Island, also known as Yongxing Island is the largest of the Paracel Islands in the South China Sea. GPS Location: 16°50′3″N 112°20′15″E. 



Salient Features: 


  1. The Island is under the control of the People's Republic of China since 1956.
  2. The island has an artificial harbor capable of docking vessels of 5,000 tonnes.
  3. The Yongxing Island Airport was completed in July 1990, with a 2,700-metre runway that is capable of handling any fourth generation fighter aircraft of the PLA Naval Air Force such as the Chengdu J-10AHShenyang J-11BH,Xian JH-7A, or Sukhoi Su-30MK2.
  4. The island's administrative centre is located on Beijing Road
  5. Police officers and soldiers stationed on the island change shifts every two years, and civilian employees change shifts every six months.
